(TRIGGER WARNING)
THIS POST IS TO SPREAD AWARENESS ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND OVERDOSE RESPONSE

Backstory:
We were in Brooklyn handing out narcan and free shirts to the homeless and happened to come across an individual overdosing in the middle of the crosswalk on what we assume was K2 or salvia; which is complicated because we’re trained for opioid related overdoses, so we weren’t ready for a situation like this one. We moved him into a corner where he’d be out of the way of traffic and controlled his seizures making sure his head didn’t hit anything. Being that we were almost 100% sure this wasn’t an opioid related overdose, we initially hesitated to narcan him. The local in the orange shirt that was helping us was misinformed and believed narcan could possibly harm him. However, even if no opioids were involved narcan would not harm the person it just wont have any effect and Unc was telling us not to narcan him. About 10 minutes passed by and he still was *consciously* seizing, so we ended up administering one dose of narcan and it proved beneficial - regulating his breathing and stopping the seizures. We waited for the ambulance and he lived to see another day.

Moral of the story; try to always carry narcan, even if you don’t use. You never know what you might see while handling your day to day business. by @fuckfentfoundation
