Jake the Alligator Man is a famous mummified half-human, half-alligator creature on display at Marsh's Free Museum in Long Beach, Washington.
Origins and Arrival in Washington
The Creation: Historians believe Jake is a classic sideshow "gaff"—a handmade artificial curiosity—likely crafted by the famous sideshow creator Homer Tate.
The Purchase: The Marsh family bought Jake in 1967 for $750 from an antique store in Long Beach, Washington.
The Display: He was placed in a glass case inside the tourist-trap museum, surrounded by vintage arcade games and other bizarre oddities.
Tabloid Fame
The 1993 Headline: Jake became a global pop-culture icon when the supermarket tabloid Weekly World News put his picture on the front page.
Wild Stories: The headline claimed a 5-foot-8-inch "missing link" half-alligator had been found in a Florida swamp. Later tabloid articles falsely reported on his daring escapes, life as a killer, and career as a cigar-smoking bachelor.
Cultural LegacyBumper Stickers: The iconic "I Brake for Jake" bumper stickers became popular nationwide on cars.
Annual Festival: The town of Long Beach hosts an annual birthday party and festival every August to celebrate Jake, featuring live music, a car show, and a bridal contest by @fuddyduddy41

The Winter FolkloreAccording to tradition, a woolly bear's body has 13 distinct segments that represent the 13 weeks of winter. People "read" the caterpillar to forecast the upcoming season:Wider brown band: A wider rusty-brown middle section means a milder, softer winter.More black segments: Longer black bands at the ends suggest a harsh, long, cold, and snowy winter.Placement of the dark bands: A dark head end points to a severe start to winter, while a dark tail end means the severe weather will hit at the end of the season.Direction of travel: Crawling south means the caterpillar is fleeing a harsh northern winter, while crawling north signals a mild winter ahead. by @fuddyduddy41
