2/2 @lcarofonseca and I just got back from two weeks in Kenya, and all I can say is WOW! I knew it would be incredible, but I didn’t fully realize how much it would exceed my expectations. Not only did we see pretty much every animal (along with their young ones), but the people are on another level as well. I took over 10,000 photos, so if you want to see the full collection of my favorites, hit the link in my bio.

Places visited: Nairobi, Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha, and Ol Pejeta.

Cannot wait to go back and explore more.

I just got back to Bogotá from what were probably the most demanding few days on the bike to date.

On Friday, I rode roughly 210km/130mi in temperatures at times over 44c/110f, from Bogotá to the town of Mariquita. On Saturday, we did a little warm-up ride to the site of the Armero Tragedy (google it), which was super interesting, and very creepy. This was all in anticipation of a bucket-list ride with some friends and 2,500 other nuts on Sunday for any cyclist, the mythical Alto de Letras (which, at 80km/50mi long, is the 3rd longest climb in the world).

Once a year, they close the road exclusively to bikes (which is quite nice considering it’s usually a very high-traffic route for big trucks and buses who often drive like maniacs), and the scene did not disappoint. Given that the road was closed, some of us decided to ride back as well, making it the biggest single day of climbing on a bike I’ve ever experienced (5.018m/16,463ft).

As hard as it was, there were many who seemed to defy what seemed possible: people going up on unicycles, people riding up with one arm or no legs, someone in a sweatshirt, rubber work boots and a bmx bike, and on and on. Just finishing is an achievement, especially in the heat that didn’t seem to dissipate even as we got above 3.000m/10,000ft, and even though it took suffering to a new level, I’m looking forward to giving it another go next year. by @fuegostein
