Thank you @u.s.embassythehague for hosting the new US Fulbright grantee at the Adams House on 14 September. The grantees were informed about Dutch politics, economics, history and culture, and at the end of the afternoon, we had a lovely welcome reception with the grantees, alums, sponsors and hosts! by @fulbrightnl

Sharing my @fulbrightnl story at the 2026 Netherlands-America Foundation @the_naf_official Transatlantic dinner last Friday was a poetic moment, the evening before the first day of the Sweelinck Academie 2026-27! I spoke alongside fellow NAF Grantees @sjana.hollowayphd @izthewizabelle @maaikedendunnen with some lovely music from fellow @conservatoriumvanamsterdam alum and American pianist @shane.vanneerden . Heartiest congratulations are in order for @karsudonmez who was warded this year’s NAF Adams van Berckel award!!

Coming to the Netherlands in 2023 was the beginning of a special period of growth. In just three years, it’s led to incredible surprises at the @mafestival_brugge competition , a groundbreaking new narrow-key piano project with @muziekinstrumentenfonds , and my new position at the Sweelinck Academy.

I never imagined that my Fulbright year would develop into such a rich new life and community abroad. Coming to the Netherlands has been more than I could have ever imagined. All of the best parts have been everything unexpected, including meeting my incredible mentor here, @davidkuyken . It took me coming here to realize who I could become, both as a person and as an artist. Often at gala dinners I’ve been asked to perform, but this time, having the chance to speak was a special opportunity to share my deep gratitude to the NAF/Fulbright, and a great honor to speak to her royal highness Princess Margriet and Mr. US Ambassador to the Netherlands, Joseph Popolo.

It means a great deal especially to be in a position to give forward to the next generation of Dutch keyboardists. To me, Dutch-American friendship means believing in the importance of exchange and mutual support and investment, with resources and commitment. I feel this way about my students at @cvajongtalent and can’t wait to see if some of my current and future students will ever explore studying and working in the States!

Yesterday, we met the new Fulbright US graduate students for the first time: Welcome to the Netherlands!
We told them all about safety, health system, volunteer opportunities, and the Dutch and hope they have a wonderful time here. by @fulbrightnl

✍️ An evening with Rachel Khong unfolded around ambition, intimacy, and the seductive instability of reinvention. She writes with startling precision about people trying to outrun histories still living inside them.

🌊 In conversation with Els Quagebeur, Khong spoke about family as something both inherited and performed: love sharpened by expectation, closeness interrupted by distance, identity shaped in the space between who we are and who we learn to become for others.

🧬 In her work, migration moves like a quiet undertow—shaping desire, shame, success, and the fantasy of self-creation that sits at the heart of the American story.

📓 What lingered was the tension itself: between freedom and inheritance, reinvention and memory, belonging and the private fear of remaining unknowable.

🤝 Within this month’s series on literature and ideas, in partnership with @fulbrightnl, @obamsterdam, @theamericanbookcenter, @internationalwriterscollective, the evening widened into a reflection on contemporary American life—its promises, its performances, and the emotional cost of constantly remaking the self.

Join us on the 21st of May at our annual Fulbright x @johnadamsnl event! This event features Rachel Khong, and her book Real Americans. In it she follows a Chinese-American family across eight decades, tracing how inheritance works in the widest sense: the stories we’re told, the choices we make, and the circumstances we don’t choose at all.
Tickets are available via this link: https://www.john-adams.nl/rachel-khong/
