Jako’s always felt deeply.

But in Kirigakure it is a sin to be weak.

As the youngest of three sons, his brother’s exceptional talents in killing and war set him up for a simple succession. A path saturated in blood had already been laid out for him.

Children raised as ninja are taught it is easy not to feel. And to not feel anything gives an emotional safety that feeling too intensely cannot promise.

His paralytic jutsu goes beyond the physical, and sometimes it feels like it is seeping into his mind with a much needed wave of sedation.

But in comparison to apathy, it is almost offensive to be heartbroken. Or to feel powerless and at the mercy of anyone else.

The most genuine word to describe it is probably vulnerability.

Well, that is the part that sucks the most, Jako decided.

And if he’s afraid to be vulnerable then it makes him think about his easily angered teammate.

Why did he notice hands that have taken many lives and weaved signs that stop hearts…shake slightly when turned gentle?

Why is that? He wondered. And something in his chest squeezed in the silence.

What happens to weapons without sheaths?

He raised his hand slightly to steady the other’s.

Or blades that sharpen themselves when drenched in blood?

“Are you gonna wish me a happy birthday?” Jako asked, peering over at Zabuza.

“It’s not time yet.” He answered dryly.

“It’s not time yet…?”

“No.”

“Aw,” Jako pushed, leaning into the other’s space. “That’s fucked up. Now all of the sudden you want to act pedantic. Well, I think it’s close enough.”

“How’re you gonna tell me… when to tell you.. Happy birthday?” Honestly, Zabuza was used to the back and forth and so he easily deflected the other man’s demands. Not that he took it very seriously in the first place. Jako was grown, and he could wait.

The Sekizui brother scrunched his nose, annoyed. If they hadn’t been drinking he would probably put up more of a fight but he opted for silence, albeit a loud one. He was perfectly able to convey, ‘You HEAR me telling you.’ with nothing but eyes and vibes.

“Well, there’s plenty of ways to kill time while you wait for your.. happy birthday.” The swordsman offered slyly, the slur behind his words dropping his voice an octave.

Jako hummed, contemplating the offer.

Jako stood up, his dry amusement hardening into something closer to annoyance.

As much as he didn’t mind admitting he was having fun at first, the longer this little fight dragged on, Jako could see it becoming less of a joke and more of a problem. Plus, he had someone counting on him to wrap this up. And he wasn’t particularly in the mood for any extra mouthing off from Zabuza, unless…it was perhaps the fun kind. (⁉️) #watdatmean

Team Biwa 🌫️

After the debut slaughter of his entire class, Zabuza is hand picked for consideration of the succession to use Kubikiribōchō. Typically Swordsman of the Mist train more than one candidate who would be able to replace them. Potential weapon experts who could wield the blades if they so happened to have an untimely death. He trains under Jūzō by himself until the next year’s genin class can graduate, this time, the rules reformed after his ‘overcompensation’. 😒

Jako Sekizui joins team Biwa from a small genin class, interested only slightly** in a boy who shoved his way into the ranks from no prominent clan. And although he has no interest in ‘stealing’ Zabuza’s sword, Biwa encourages them to compete like it anyway.

Now the team looses their sensei after the war when Biwa defects, taking the Executioner’s Blade along with him. This causes both the boys to reevaluate what their sensei’s pragmatic teachings meant to each of them, and plants a seed for their dissatisfaction with Kirigakure as a whole.

In short, he definitely taught them to be bad.

Jako’s been following Zabuza ever since they were kids.
Watching his back was not a problem, and staying two steps behind the swordsman was easy to do. Especially when he wasn’t really driven to run out ahead anyway.

Zabuza Momochi is the one who was dissatisfied with the world. Sometimes Jako wonders if it’s because the man was not one of the ones benefitting from the system. But Zabuza’s reasonings aren’t important to Jako, not really. Maybe he really does care, and Jako is the one with a weak heart.

But watching Zabuza turn around from his mission and his self-centeredness to come back for him says a lot. Especially if you have known Zabuza long enough. And even though it still feels a little shocking, it happens more than once.
After a while it begins to feel like it might mean something, but that’s not worth digging into.

Jako comes from a pretty well off criminal family and while they do some questionable stuff, he doesn’t really question it because Kirigakure is known for being sketchy. Him leaving the comfort of his status and home for Zabuza is a lot because he’s not exactly driven.
