The hits just won’t stop coming. 60 miles of head clearing in mountains and canyons on foot this last week. Scrambling some cliff edges, looking for paths, wondering where they all go. by @fullsizepiece

The Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas. I found solace in this hostile environment during dark times, and spent many days trekking, shooting, and collecting memories as well. I have much territory yet to traverse out here, but as I've recently moved back to Ohio, it will be some time before I'm able to visit again. I spent a majority of the afternoon doing what I could to assist with the flow of the protest through downtown traffic, while simultaneously telling white people to silence themselves and calm the fuck down. The vast majority of the instigation I saw was stemming from white folks who haven't yet spent the time to determine their role in this matter, or were clearly hoping to be the center of attention. For the uninitiated white American; sit down, shut the fuck up, be vigilante, and be prepared on behalf of anyone who ISN'T white. Your role is being an ally, not a main character. Showing up during a protest doesn't make you an activist. Being angry and lashing out foolishly, doesn't make you an activist. Your role is to be abundantly peaceful, and to regulate your own people. Things like vandalizing property, starting fires, and walking onto an open interstate, are very clearly going to be met with sweeping authoritative force, just like any other day, so act/encourage others accordingly. Your emotions aren't relevant, hoard them. Educate yourself about what is within your legal rights as a US citizen, what level of civil-disobedience you are willing to adopt, and what the consequences may be for your actions. White people are privileged with the choice of being involved. If you want to sow anarchy and overpower the state, then start your own fucking movement and don't pin your baggage of inaction onto someone else's labor. If you can't take the consequences on the chin, then don't show up. If you're so mad that you can't help yourself; inspect those emotions personally for however long it takes then reassess. If you want to speed up that process, ask minority friends if they'd share their experiences with you and practice active listening. Show some humanity, this isn't a fucking dress-rehearsal.
On the whole, I saw what I expected to see of Austin, TX. Tons of people, tons of voices, walking side by side together. I did see restraint from many officers, I saw poise and control from many demonstrators, and I learned additional relevant actions to be helpful during events like this in the future.

Michael Ramos was killed by a police officer on April 24th, 2020, half a mile from my home in SE Austin. The officer who fired on an unarmed Ramos was already under investigation for a lethal confrontation in the summer of 2019. Yesterday, Ramos' mother, family, and friends, gathered to make a televised statement pleading with APD to bring the officers involved to justice, and urged demonstrators to do so peacefully. It was difficult to hear the heaviness of loss in her voice, and to hear from Michael's friends their certainty that they could've helped descalate the situation, had they been allowed to.
Chas Moore, the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Austin Justice Coalition, communicated during speeches downtown and during the Ramos' statement on Sunday, that they were pulling out of their plans for continued demonstration and public statements regarding Justice for Mike Ramos due to growing evidence that unaffiliated third-parties were using the protests against police brutality as a cover to sow chaos. This was readily apparent downtown. by @fullsizepiece
