My Darling Fairy,
I knew the time was near, but it came too soon. We planned to take you out for holiday photos, your yellow fluff against colorful lights. It’s been almost a week and doesn’t feel real. I find myself thinking that you’re still here, sleeping (or pooping) under my dad’s desk or trying to sneak into the carpeted rooms.

I miss our routine of putting you to roost in your crate, stacked atop of some totes that still need unpacking. As I attached the plastic dish to the door, you’d peck the dish hard, surprised that it was empty. When I returned with the bottle of water, you drank eagerly as I poured into the dish, then lifted your head up making cute little tongue to beak sounds, then down and up again. It was the best water ever 💦 The day you stopped doing this, I knew 💔

Your absence has stolen my joy 💔 You were magical, yellow fluff and definitely the most adored chicken in town. Rest easy my Pretty Fairy 💕

I want to say how much I appreciate the expert guidance and compassionate care of the vets and staff of @texasavian_exotichospital When it became apparent that she wasn’t going to improve, they were able to help her go calmly, in our arms and for that I’m so grateful ❤️

Chicken food and water have been rejected. Eggs, Green things, even meal worms or black soldier fly larva are an absolute no. But she loves blueberries. She will nibble at sardines if I wiggle in front of her face. This morning I offered watermelon and she went for it ❤️. She does not care for the nutritional supplement prescribed by the vet. It’s a tedious process getting it down her. I suppose that I will soon need to learn how to gavage feed her. (Any tips on supplies or techniques appreciated).

Fairy has a history or arthritis symptoms for over a year. Recently, the Meloxicam appeared to stop working and she couldn’t get up. Then she lost her appetite. We went to the vet last week. Her X-rays were not definitive because “something” obstructed the view of her organs. The last slide shows a darkened image of a particular organ on her left side (I forgot which organ), that the vet said is pushed down too far within the body cavity. Now I’m wondering where that might be in relationship to her crop. Perhaps that is tied to her not wanting to eat. We have a specialist appointment tomorrow that we were referred to for “advanced imaging”, which I later found out was a CT scan, rather than a sono. This involves anesthesia, which gives me pause. I don’t know what to do. At the moment she looks pretty normal other than her feeding issue and a bit uncomfortable when rising. The additional, highest dose of Meloxicam must be working and/or I know they hide their pain. ….CONTINUED in comments by @fullyfeathered

Fairy has been experiencing bouts of lameness for a little over a year now. We’d give her the prescribed ten days of Meloxicam and she’d bounce back to normal in about a week. This video is from earlier this year. Recently she had two episodes without much time in between and the Meloxicam didn’t work. Then she about stopped eating. We went to the avian vet last week. X-rays were inconclusive. The vet says the X-ray is being obstructed by “something” (likely fluid) and wants to refer her for “advanced imaging” (sonogram). She doubled the Meloxicam to 1.7 ml daily to see if that would help. I do think she feels a little better but now she really isn’t eating or drinking on her own (except blueberries). She loves blueberries. Unfortunately, I’m not very optimistic on the outcome of this. I guess I will call in the morning the and see how much the sonogram will be. I’m so sad. I lost four chickens over the summer and I just can’t loose another one right now. Especially her. #bufforpingtonsofinstagram #petchickens #backyardchickens by @fullyfeathered

Betty. She’s perfect! Really miss seeing this girl everyday.
EDIT: Betty is alive and well. I’m staying away from my home. It’s been a year now that I moved into my parents apartment to care for my mom. She has advanced Alzheimer’s.
