Hey guys. Welcome to my page! Hereโ€™s a little bit about me and my business Functional Aesthetics E.C.

First off, WHY the name โ€œFunctional Aestheticsโ€?

MOST people think it has something to do with FUNCTIONAL fitness.

This is partly true, however, the BIGGEST reason I have named my business Functional Aesthetics stems from my journey over the past 17+ years.

Beginning in High School when I first injured my back and transitioned from a long-distance runner into lifting weights and then getting sick which caused me (over the course of two years) lose all 30lbs of muscle that I had built in my first two years of training.

Over the next 10 years, I struggled with my health and got into natural bodybuilding and holistic healing as part of my recovery process.

During that time, I worked in various industries from the trades, to retail then health care and back to the trades.

Functional Aesthetics is all about adopting a CREATIVE approach to becoming your best self regardless of your environment.

I believe that fitness should be more than just looking good or how much you can squat, bench or deadlift.

ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT (Speed, power and agility)

ย
Most people know that STRENGTH training can improve both the LENGTH and QUALITY of their life.

However, many of you probably donโ€™t know that POWER TRAINING is even more important for QUALITY of life as we age.

ย
Power training helps boost beneficial hormones such as HGH and TESTOSTERONE which tend to decrease with age, increases our reaction time, balance and coordination and also helps improve mood and alertness by stimulating the release of Brain Derived Neu tropic Factor BDNF.

Lastly, VISCERAL fat has been getting a lot of attention these days due to itโ€™s negative effects on METABOLIC HEALTH.

The GOOD NEWS is, that unlike SUBCUTANEOUS fat, the loss of which is heavily dependent on DIET and LOW INTENSITY exercise (walking for example), Visceral fat can easily be burned through POWER TRAINING alone.

ย
Despite all of these awesome benefits, FEW people continue to sprint, jump or do any sort of explosive training after they graduate college, leave the sports arena and transition into adult life.

For this reason, SPEED and POWER are the first fitness metrics to decline for the majority of people.

ย
As beneficial as SPEED and POWER are to our HEALTH, PERFORMANCE and AESTHETICS, they are not things that you should jump into without a building a SOLID foundation in muscular endurance, building a decent amount of lean muscle with bodybuilding and preparing your muscles, tendons and ligaments with some preparatory heavy lifting.

ย
This is WHY in my first HYBRID STRENGTH program, SPEED and POWER are preceded by endurance, bodybuilding and powerlifting segments.

FOUNDATIONAL STRENGTH

In the fitness space, people tend to gravitate towards one extreme or the other.

Either they are ALL ABOUT mobility and โ€œfunctionalityโ€ or they believe you can never be TOO big or TOO strong.

I believe function and aesthetics are not mutually exclusive.

Therefore, while the best athlete on the field is rarely the strongest guy, the best athlete is rarely the weakest.

For this reason, among others, I believe everyone should possess a baseline level of strength.

Baring contraindications, basic competence should be developed in the SQUAT, DEADLIFT, BENCH PRESS, OVERHEAD PRESS and PULL-UP. These exercises form the FOUNDATION of strength, aesthetics and athleticism.

Squat โ€“ 1.5 x BW

Deadlift โ€“ 2x BW

Bench Press โ€“ 1x BW

OHP โ€“ 60% BW

PULL-UP - at least 1

These are numbers that can be maintained while still possessing decent endurance and agility.

Depending on the INDIVIDUAL and GENETIC predisposition, one may wish to become stronger than these numbers.

However, I fail to see the point in doing so if other metrics of fitness (the functional movement, structural integrity and balanced energy system development that I discussed in my previous post on โ€œFUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTโ€) are not maintained while doing so.

A SOLID base of strength also SETS US UP to perform well in the FINAL pillar SPEED/POWER.

I have created a 16 Week program for guys over 40 that integrates ENDURANCE, BODYBUILDING, POWERLIFTING and speed/power training all into one STRATEGIC framework.

If you are a guy over 40 who wants to build 5-10lbs of lean muscle and strip away 20+lbs of body fat without excessive HUNGER, CRAVINGS or LOW energy, this program might be right for you.

Taking the time to learn proper technique and understand the principles behind effective training can feel tedious in the moment.

But that investment gives you much more flexibility later.

Once you understand the fundamentals, you can be creative.

You can build effective workouts around the equipment you have, the time you have, and wherever you happen to be.

The better you understand the rules, the more freedom you have to break them while keeping your training effective.

Training hard and training with intention are important if you want to get the most out of your workouts.

But training alone doesn't get you in better shape.

Training is the stimulus.

Sleep, recovery, and proper nutrition are what allow your body to actually adapt.

The ~23 hours you spend outside the gym can have a bigger impact on your fitness than the one hour you spend sweating.

In the short term, you can use caffeine and other stimulants to get through your workouts.

But if you're disorganized outside the gym, winging your nutrition, and allowing stress to pile up unaddressed, it will eventually affect your performance, motivation, and recovery.

Hard work is important.

But just as important is creating an environment that allows your hard work to pay off.

You probably don't have a motivation problem. You have a clarity problem.

โ€œI need to work out more.โ€

What does โ€œmoreโ€ actually mean?

ยท What will you do?

ยท How much?

ยท How often?

โ€œI need to eat better.โ€

What does โ€œbetterโ€ actually look like?

ยท What will you eat?

ยท How much?

ยท How often?

โ€œI need to get more sleep.โ€

What time are you actually going to bed and getting up?

You canโ€™t consistently follow through on something you havenโ€™t clearly defined.
