Are your rows accidentally turning into bicep curls? 🛑

When you focus on pulling your hand toward your stomach or hip during a row, you are likely letting your lower arm take over the movement. The chest and back control the upper part of your arm, while your biceps and triceps control the lower half. If you just pull with your hand, you will end up doing a bicep curl or a tricep extension instead of actually targeting your back.

The better approach: Focus entirely on where your elbows are going and try to relax your hands.
For Rows: Think about driving your elbows up and back while doing your best to keep your wrist under your hand.
For Chest Presses: Stop worrying about getting your hands to touch each other at the top. Instead, focus on your elbows moving through their full extension.
If you want to properly isolate your chest, back, or shoulders during a push or pull, you have to prioritize where your elbow is moving in space, not your hand.

Over the Summer, we met Beth visiting from Arizona. During her short trip, she wanted to start resistance training after hearing all of the positive benefits it can provide at age 62.

Initially, she wanted to get into a rhythm and find a gym with a similar format back home. I somewhat had other plans for her 😂

She had never strength trained before and I wanted to make the most of our 1:1 check ins.

My goal was to empower her with tools so she could walk into any gym, regardless of the format and lift. On top of that, we talked basic nutrition and more importantly implementation.

About a month in town and she gained 2 pounds of muscle and dropped 2 percent bodyfat 🤗

I heard from Beth recently, months after she went back home. Guess what? She is lifting on her own now 😁

Mission accomplished ⭐️

What I loved most about working with her is the enthusiasm she brought day in and out ready to learn. Beth is a prime example, the right information can change your life, if you let it 😉 by @functionallifestyles

Not all gyms are created equal! 🏋️‍♂️ We are ranking popular name brand gyms on a tier list to see which ones are the best for losing weight and building muscle.
Here is how the brands stack up:
The Top Spot: Functional Lifestyles earns an S-minus ranking because it covers almost everything, only requiring some supplemental aerobic work.
Solid Options: CrossFit and F45 land in the B-tier thanks to their emphasis on strength training and structured workouts.
Middle of the Pack: OrangeTheory, Barry's, Peloton, Hyrox, and Planet Fitness all sit in the C-tier due to drawbacks like a lack of strength training, oversized classes, or limited accountability.
The Bottom: Zumba falls to the F-tier because, despite burning calories, it lacks strength training and built-in progressions. by @functionallifestyles

Struggling with lower back pain but still want to crush your workouts? 💪 Try these simple exercise swaps to keep moving safely while targeting the same muscle groups:
Squats: Swap Back Squats for Goblet Squats. Goblet squats are less demanding on mobility while keeping the same movement archetype.
Deadlifts: Swap Barbell Deadlifts for Trap Bar or Kettlebell Deadlifts. These alternatives allow your knees to track forward for more leg drive, keeping the weight centered and reducing reliance on your lower back and hips.
Cardio: Swap flat Running for Incline Running. Running on an incline treadmill or a hill significantly reduces impact on your body.
Core: Swap Situps for Planks. Situps require active spinal flexion, while planks are an isometric hold that works the rectus abdominis without flexing or extending your spine. by @functionallifestyles
