My little friend from yesterday 🥲

As I perched by the path to photograph this Fly Agaric, this cheeky robin hopped down to investigate. I don't think we'd ever met before and I had nothing to give him, but he was so sweet and so curious I'll have to be better prepared next time! Where's a worm when you need one?

Woohoo! A joyous welcome back, thanks to some prime Wrinkled Peach mushrooms (Rhodotus palmatus) today!

They're so beautiful and strange... those wrinkled caps, peachy gills and lovely amber droplets underneath. I spent a long time adoring them despite being next to a busy road 😂 I'll never tire of them!

Quite happy with these photos as well, considering the awkward positioning of them by the metal fencing. So pleased to have timed this meeting perfectly 🥰🍑

She's posting ✨️smut✨️ on main!

Another new weird and wonderful fungus today for #MycologyMonday 🌽 Corn smut a.k.a. Mexican Truffle a.k.a Mycosarcoma maydis 🌽

The fungus forms these silvery-grey galls on the above-ground parts of the corn which eventually erupt with dark spores 👀

These are a delicacy in Mexican cuisine, known as 'huitlacoche' and prized for their earthy, savory mushroom flavour 😋

I'd have had no idea what this was if it wasn't for @allthingsfungi posting about it earlier this year. We just happened to spot one whilst picking pumpkins at the weekend 😂

🥨 FINALLY I have found the real PRETZEL SLIME!

After being fooled by a plasmodial stage of a different Trichia in the past 🕵‍♀️ this Hemitrichia serpula is fully formed and looks just like its namesake. If only I were 1cm tall and had some salt!

Mega chuffed to have met this weirdo, some of it looks very heiroglyphic though... I wonder what it says in slime language 👀

Thanks @this_forest_floor for confirming ID 🫶

Teeny treasures for #FungiFriday

My pet log at the park has decomposed into pieces and I don't know how much longer the Teal Conifer-pin will remain 🥲 each time I spy some, it's such a treat! Dendrostilbella smaragdina is SO beautiful but SO tiny - because of this It's probably very under-recorded... (Pic number 4 for scale). The conifer wood just seems to have a blue hue until I magnify it!

Another tiny but beautiful glasscup was found nearby, a new one for me - Oribilia rosea. I think I now have discs in all colours! 🌈

One of those very creepy but very cool encounters where a fungus takes control over the host and bursts out of the joints 'Last of Us' style!

Though familiar with various cordyceps species over the years, I've never seen a zombie quite like this before. My best ID efforts are Clock Beetle (Pterostichus sp.) with Hirsutella sp. parasite from the Ophiocordyceps family 🧟‍♀️ Found victim upturned in the moss in conifer woodland, Lincoln UK.

Many thanks to Max @allthingsfungi for being as excited as me (and encouraging and generous with knowledge as always 🙏). The specimen has been incubated for further inspection...

Don't worry, nothing like this has been known to infect humans.... yet 👀 sorry for any nightmares though - those cloudy eyes may haunt me!
