Holyrood park wild-fire last night. It is distressing to see the destruction /displacement of wildlife but eventually the habitat will regenerate. Stay safe everyone! #WildfirePrevention #edinburgh

Can anyone identify these “spinners”? microscopic motile and dizzy! I’ve kept a colony of Caulerpa in a marine aquarium for nearly 20 years. I was informed that the “live rock” which i established the habitat was sustainably sourced from Fiji; we’ve seen so many beautiful life forms emerge including brittle stars, bristle worms and algae. more videos coming soon… #seagrapes #caulerpa #aquarium #microscope #naturephotography by @fungipat

Never a dull moment while wandering! Shouted at by a doctor and invited into his Fungi Lab! 😂👍

Give @fungipat a follow on socials and stay tuned for his next video about his retro gaming museum!

I pulled this T.V. set from a river in Scotland. 3 objectives: 1. Remove the hazardous waste from our environment. 2. Curious to see the degradation after years on the riverbed. 3. Raise awareness and try to comprehend the logic of mindless people who dump rubbish in the countryside. On fungi forays I try to pick up as much rubbish as possible: vapes, crisp packets, red bull / monster energy drinks and plastic bottles are littered on most roadsides. #nature #pollution #scotland #environment #rohs @bio__bog by @fungipat

🌈🔬Laser Microscopy! The growth of mycelium is orchestrated by a specialised region at the hyphal tip called the Spitzenkörper.

🚀The German name translates to “apical point” sometimes referred to as the apical vesicle cluster. It is the primary site of cellular extension and cell wall synthesis in filamentous fungi.

🧪It is estimated that thousands of vesicles are docking and fusing with the cell membrane every second.

🔬Imaged using confocal laser scanning microscopy, for scale, each hypha is approximately 10 micrometres diameter, thinner than a human hair! #mycology #fungi #microscopy #gfp #confocal by @fungipat

Exploring mycorrhizae on oak roots, the soil habitat is a microcosm of life. Not only plant and fungus but also bacteria, nematodes and numerous “wee beesties! The pseudo coloured images are confocal laser scanning microscopy images. #fungi #mycorrhizae #plants #mycelium #timelapse by @fungipat

“Inferno“- the new, eagerly awaited Boards of Canada album is out today: it’s awesome, this is “blood in the labyrinth” suitable for a slime mould plasmodium. originally recorded on a 8-bit monochrome ccd camera 15 years ago, today i used a “red hot” lookup table to brighten up the 6000 frames (5 frames per minute)! #boardsofcanada #inferno #warprecords #slime #blood by @fungipat

Life is tough for this little springtail—with Ascobolus fungus artillery firing left and right of him, and mycologists prodding around with their cameras and tweezers…he doesn’t have anywhere to hide!

The fungus is called Ascobolus carletonii. Watch how the ascocarps cover the lens with their spores!

🎥 This footage was recorded by @fungipat in his lab whilst we were looking at some red grouse pellets that we collected from the hills outside Edinburgh.

Does anybody know what the springtail is? Or even what family it may belong to—Katiannidae?

Ergot sclerotia spring to life, sprouting tiny mushroom-like, stalked fruiting bodies. The ergot fungus is classified in the phylum “Ascomycota” therefore considered more closely related to morels, truffles, cup fungi, and yeasts than to gilled mushrooms.
Each fruiting body is embellished with internal batteries of microscopic spore guns called “asci” which shoot needle-like spores into the air. Each spore gun has exactly 8 spores. These highly specialised spores are shaped like needles, there’s several reasons why… The filamentous spores are beautifully aerodynamic for dispersal and the shape means they readily attach to the hairs on stigmas on flowering grasses. [Watch until the end to see the spores eject and glide like arrows into the air!]

Ergot sclerotia contain a cocktail of alkaloids; some are highly toxic if ingested. Recorded throughout history, ergot sclerotia were sometimes unknowingly baked into bread, and consumed which caused poisoning outbreaks of ergotism known as “St Anthony’s Fire”. Symptoms included extreme psychoactive effects, vasoconstriction and gangrene. Ergot is a source of medically useful alkaloids including lysergic acid and ergotamine. Nowadays, several derivatives of ergot alkaloids are prescribed to treat migraines and other conditions. Ergometrine is routinely administered to mothers during childbirth to prevent post-partum haemorrhage, thereby saving millions of lives. #ergot #fungus #biology #timelapse #boardsofcanada by @fungipat

Tai ne dirbtinis intelektas. Tai mikroskopinių grybų vaizdai užfiksuoti Edinburge, Škotijos mokslininko mikologo dr. Patrick Hickey laboratorijoje. Juos galite išvysti Aistės Žegulytės filme Holy Destructors / Dulkės, kaulai ir stebuklai, kuris ir toliau rodomas kino teatruose.

Vienas įstabus epizodas, kuriame pelėsinis grybas pasiglemžia braškę, buvo filmuojamas žiemą. Kūrėjams teko gerokai paieškoti šviežiai atrodančių uogų. „Mums reikėjo, kad braškė natūraliai supelytų, tad joje „apgyvendinome“ grybų sporas. Žinoma, reikėjo ne vieno bandymo, šiam filmavimui sunaudojome kelis kilogramus braškių, kol užfiksavome tokį procesą, kokį ir įsivaizdavome“, – sako mikologas. Pokalbį su juo surasite komentare. by @fungipat
