James Carlton Spinney
1958 – 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Carlton Spinney, who died at his home in Île-Bizard, Québec, on August 25, 2026, at 68.

James was, above all, a true family man. He was the heart of his family—brought people together, made every gathering feel like a celebration, and believed that life was meant to be lived fully. A bon vivant, James was an exceptional host, generous with his time and his table, always ready to turn an ordinary moment into something worth celebrating.

He took great pride in transforming his home into an oasis—an inviting place to enjoy and share with the people he loved. Everyone who walked through his door felt comfortable, welcomed, and at home.

James worked hard and played hard. He approached life with determination and an unwavering belief in the people he loved. He championed the dreams and aspirations of each of his children, supporting them and taking immense pride in their accomplishments. His humour, warmth, and larger-than-life spirit made him impossible to forget.

James dedicated his talents to Canada Panel, now known as Everest Automation, and to ID Solutions, contributing to both from their beginnings. Outside of work, he was passionate about music and sports. He valued fitness and staying active, followed world news, and never lost his appetite for conversation, connection, and a good time.

James will be deeply missed by the mother of his children, Claudine Brunelle; his children, Pascale (Matthew White), Sean, and William; his beloved granddaughter, Jackie; his brother, Hugh (Christine); and his sisters, Catherine (Barry) and Elizabeth (Duane), as well as the many family members and friends whose lives he touched.

James leaves behind much more than memories. He leaves behind a family whose dreams he cherished, a lifetime of celebrations and stories, and a lasting example of how to work hard, love generously, laugh often, and make the most of the life you are given.

A celebration of life will be held October 9, 2026, from 2:00–5:00 PM at L’Espace Canal, 4020 Rue Saint-Ambroise, Pte 140, Montréal.

CALGARY OPERA OPENS SEASON WITH REIMAGINED CLASSIC, MADAMA BUTTERFLY 🦋!

A meditation on survival, displacement, and the illusion of the American Dream.

Calgary, AB – Calgary Opera proudly opens its 2025/26 main stage season with Giacomo Puccini’s tragic masterpiece Madama Butterfly, a timeless tale of love, betrayal, and cultural collision. With performances beginning November 1, 2025, at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, this reimagined production — directed by acclaimed stage director Mo Zhou and conducted by Calgary Opera’s Artistic Director Jonathan Brandani — promises to deliver an emotionally powerful and visually stunning experience.

A Co-Production by Calgary Opera, Arizona Opera and Opera Grand Rapids, Madama Butterfly runs on November 1 and 7 at 7:30 p.m. and on November 2 at 2 p.m. with its new matinee offering this season, at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

“Set in post-WWII Nagasaki during the American-led Allied Occupation of Japan, Madama Butterfly explores survival and illusion in a time of cultural upheaval. We anchor Puccini’s lush score in a moment when personal dreams collided with intricate historical realities,” said Stage Director Mo Zhou.

“The challenge has been to honour the work’s emotional power while revealing its deeper human truth — to move beyond stereotype and sentimentality, and instead give voice to a woman who dares to believe, even when the dream she was sold proves false. I’m also deeply proud to collaborate with an all first-generation Japanese female design team, whose vision brings authenticity, intentional care, and emotional insight to this story.”
