WORLD STROKE DAY | 29 OCTOBER

Every Second Counts. Every Action Matters👌🏻

This World Stroke Day, the Early Childhood Development (ECD) team/ Child Development Centre raises awareness about stroke prevention, early recognition, and timely intervention.

Stroke can affect anyone, including pregnant women, newborns, children, and adults. Recognising the warning signs and seeking immediate medical attention can save lives and reduce long-term disability.

At ECD, we believe that nurturing healthy beginnings, promoting awareness, and ensuring timely access to care are essential for healthier futures.

Know the signs. Act FAST. Save a life.

This World Cerebral Palsy Day, Give a Child a Seat. 💚

As we celebrate World Cerebral Palsy Day 20 under the theme “Unique and United,” we are proud to introduce Appropriate Paper-based Technology (APT), a lightweight, highly durable and locally made technology designed to support children with disabilities.

At the Child Development Centre, OAUTHC, we have a dedicated team of healthcare practitioners and parents who have undergone training in APT craftsmanship. Following this training, APT equipment was introduced to families, and we were encouraged by the number of families who showed interest and asked how they could access these adaptive seats and equipment for their children.

The equipment includes corner seats, CP chairs, standing frames, footrests and more, all made locally to meet the needs of children with disabilities.

We are also grateful to the Management of OAUTHC for supporting the team with a space for the APT workshop, creating an opportunity for the team to produce more adaptive equipment locally and reach more families.

Now, we need your support.

Every child deserves the opportunity to sit, stand, play, participate and thrive.

You can help us provide adaptive equipment to children who need them.

Give a child a seat.
Be the reason a child can sit, stand and take part.
Your gift can provide adaptive equipment for a child.

Cost of equipment:
Chair – ₦15,000
Standing Frame – ₦10,000
Footrest – ₦5,000

You can contribute in full or in part. Every amount helps.

Every child with cerebral palsy deserves to be seen, counted and supported.

Over the past two years, the Early Childhood Development Project has been working to strengthen the identification and support of children with developmental disabilities, including children living with cerebral palsy.

Through our work with health facilities and families, one thing has become increasingly clear: we need better data to understand the children we are supporting and the services they need.

This is why we are working to develop and pilot the South-West Nigeria Cerebral Palsy Register across two specialist centres: University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife.

The register will help us build a clearer picture of children living with cerebral palsy, including their clinical needs, associated challenges, risk factors and the services they currently receive. More importantly, this information can help us advocate for earlier identification, better access to multidisciplinary care, stronger health systems and improved support for children and their families.

But building and sustaining a register requires resources.

So, we are putting our steps behind this important work💪🏻

We have joined the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Steptember Challenge to raise funds towards the development and pilot implementation of the Cerebral Palsy Register.

For us, this is not just about counting steps. It is about taking steps towards better data, better services and better opportunities for children with cerebral palsy to thrive in their homes, schools and communities.

We would be grateful to our LinkedIn community for supporting us by donating, sharing our campaign, or simply helping us spread the word.

Every step counts. Every contribution matters. Together, we can help make children with cerebral palsy more visible in the systems that serve them.

Day 4 of the Research Methods and Scientific Writing Workshop was lit🥰

This was one of those sessions i had really been looking forward to, especially Proposal Development/Finding Opportunities and Journal Article Publication Secrets.

Our amazing facilitators took us through so many practical and important areas, from identifying research funding opportunities and developing strong proposals to finding reputable journals for publishing our work. We also learnt about the importance of networking, partnerships, and collaborations, as well as what to look out for when responding to Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

One thing I really appreciate about this workshop is how practical every session has been. Today, we didn’t just talk about RFPs; we had a group exercise where we reviewed actual RFPs and discussed what to look out for. That made the learning even more engaging and real.

Honestly, being part of the Research Methods and Scientific Writing Workshop has been such a beautiful and insightful experience. From research methods to data analysis, proposal development and now publication and funding opportunities, each day has added something valuable to my research journey.

I am grateful for the knowledge, the connections, the conversations, and, most importantly, the opportunity to learn from amazing facilitators and researchers from different backgrounds. 🙏🏽

Thank you Union for African Population Studies and American Institutes for Research Institutes for Research for this incredible opportunity.

Day 3 of the Research Methods and Scientific Writing Workshop went really well🥰

The day started with Quasi-experimental Designs – Other Ways to Obtain Counterfactuals, with a focus on Discontinuity Designs and the importance of the cut-off point when using Regression Discontinuity Design. This session was facilitated by our amazing teacher David Seidenfeld👏👏. We also had an interesting session on Matching Designs: Theory and Examples, facilitated by Marlous de Milliano👏👏. I really enjoyed how practical and relatable the session was.

The day ended with a Stata hands-on exercise on matching, facilitated by Jacob Novignon👏👏 . It was such a practical experience! Jacob said something that really made me laugh: “You are happy when you see that all is going well when working on Stata, but when you begin to see red, then you feel bad.” 😂 And honestly, anyone who has worked with Stata can relate🤣

Overall, it was another amazing learning experience. What makes this workshop exceptional for me is the practicality. Despite how fully packed the sessions are, there is always an opportunity to apply what we are learning, ask questions, practise, and learn from one another.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn, unlearn and improve my research skills.

Once again, a big thank you to Union for African Population Studies and American Institutes for Research for this privilege🥰

Jua lilitujalia, nasi tuliorembeka tukatambaza kwa mwanga wa Nairobi. Ibadan ku sawa, ila Savanna ina mengi matamu. Nami ni mtamu. (Kiswahilli Language)

The Sun graced our way, and us, those who are graceful took a lovely share of beauty. We kept Nairobi lit, and her people marveled at us, sun-kissed. Ibadan, our home is great, but the African Savannah has many awesome stuff for us. And I, Funmi, I'm beautifully made (English Translation)

Day 2 of the Research Methods and Scientific Writing Workshop was amazing🥰

A big thank you to our amazing facilitators for taking us through Experimental Design, where we explored topics such as estimating the counterfactual, experimental/RCT designs, the benefits and criticisms of RCTs, ethical considerations, and the difference between random sampling and random assignment: something that is often wrongly used interchangeably.

We also delved into Mixed Methods Research, which I found particularly interesting. We explored the differences between qualitative and quantitative research, different qualitative methods, and when to use qualitative versus quantitative approaches.

What made the sessions even more interesting was the use of practical exercises, real-life scenarios, and group activities that allowed us to apply what we were learning rather than just listening to theory.

I am grateful for the opportunity to learn, unlearn, and gain new perspectives on research. Truly, it has been a beautiful learning experience so far, and I am looking forward to the remaining sessions😊

A big thank you to Union for African Population Studies and American Institutes for Research Institutes for Research for this incredible opportunity, and to our amazing facilitators David Seidenfeld, Marlous de Milliano , and Jacob Novignon for making Day Two such a valuable learning experience💪.

Day One at the Research & Scientific Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪

It has been an amazing experience at the Research & Scientific Workshop here in Nairobi, Kenya, a workshop funded by the Union for African Population Studies and the American Institutes for Research

Day One was truly insightful and enriching! We had the opportunity to reflect and deepen our understanding of Monitoring and Evaluation, Impact Evaluation, Counterfactuals, and the importance of baseline data, facilitated by David Seidenfeld, who made the sessions engaging and relatable through practical examples.

We later delved into Theory of Change, Internal and External Validity, facilitated by Marlous de Milliano, before rounding off the day with a hands-on Stata session, expertly handled by Jacob Novignon.

Beyond the lessons, what made the day even more special was the opportunity to learn, share ideas, exchange perspectives, and challenge our thinking. It was a beautiful reminder that what works in one context may not necessarily work in another, and that meaningful learning happens when we listen, question, and learn from one another.

I feel truly privileged to be part of this amazing gathering and to have the opportunity to contribute my thoughts and perspectives alongside other brilliant researchers from across Africa.

A big thank you to Union for African Population Studies and American Institutes for Research for this incredible opportunity, and to our amazing facilitators David Seidenfeld, Marlous de Milliano, and Jacob Novignon, for making Day One such a valuable learning experience.

Looking forward to all that the rest of the workshop has in store🥰.
