Living directly beside a major highway looks convenient, but highway design is built around the exact opposite idea. Controlled-access roads intentionally limit driveways, intersections and direct property access because vehicles traveling at highway speed need predictable entry and exit points.

Entrance ramps provide something transportation engineers call an acceleration lane. It gives drivers enough distance to increase speed before merging with traffic. Without that transition, a vehicle entering directly from a driveway could be moving tens of kilometers per hour slower than surrounding cars, creating a huge speed differential and dramatically reducing reaction time.

Highways also generate more than just traffic noise.
Tire-road contact becomes a major source of noise at higher speeds, while particulate pollution can come from exhaust, brake wear and tires. Homes very close to busy roads therefore often use sound barriers, vegetation or increased setback distances.

Urban planners usually prefer a hierarchy where homes connect to local streets, local streets connect to larger arterial roads, and only then do those roads feed into highways.

Instant commuting sounds great until you have to merge from your mailbox.
