Now playing, "Bocetos De Espanฬƒa (dyc)", the Young Fresh Fellows' newly released black vinyl love letter to ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ

First impressions - primetime classic punky garage-rock YFF played with tons of energy and crisply captured 'as live' in the studio. Scott & co are definitely on a roll ๐Ÿ‘Œ

Thanks to Folc Records for this great release, and good job on prompt delivery ๐Ÿ‘

One last dodgy video from Saturday's Elton Joan & The Rocketmen fundraiser for St Oswald's Hospice, live at Newcastle Irish Centre.

This time it's 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' with Maximo Park's Paul Smith guesting in the George Michael Live Aid role.

Canny version ๐Ÿ‘

Gig 56/26 - across to Sunderland for a mini gig and live video shoot with arty weird popsters Amateur Ornithologist at Ship Isis ๐Ÿป

Always great to see Daniel, Jenny and the AO gang, and interesting to see the performance captured by soundman Martin @Harbourmaster and cameraman Chris @sundshortsfilm & his team ๐ŸŽฅ

Pre-gig food & stops courtesy of the excellent Bridge Hotel Vaults and The Fire Station Engine Room (although I was heartbroken to find that Propa Pies had run out of GF pies when we arrived late afternoon - next time fellas๐Ÿคž)

So, fun times in @musiccity.uk including a bonus nerdy music chat catch-up with Michael @poprecs ๐Ÿ˜‰

Gig 55/26 - up to Newcastle for a BRILLIANT night at the Irish Centre for Elton Joan & the Rocketmen, aka Liz Corney and Field Music band plus special guests, raiding the songbook of Elton John & Bernie Taupin.

Loads of love in the room and loads of cash raised for St Oswald's Hospice.

Great to catch up with our pals Mike & Helen @mikey.hebden, Daniel @amateurornithologist and Jenny @mushroomjenny, plus a whole bunch of good folk from the NE music scene, including our host Liz @lizcorneymusic, Peter & David @fieldmusicmusic, @andrewjwl, @fayemaccalman, Paul @thinkinginpictures, Fran @atfkmusic, and Nick & Bridie @staithe.music

MVP awarded to Al Brewis ๐Ÿ‘

Gig 54/26 - back home to the Brudenell for a stormin' night of loud, rockin', horn-driven, garage-rock meets R&B with Jim Jones All-Stars, plus an opening set of solo electric blues/soul/gospel from Edgar Jones.

Jim Jones is a true 100% rock & roll believer, he never disappoints, and his six-piece band matches him blow for blow on stage, needle in red throughout the show.

We all need a full-on blast of rock & roll every once in a while - like the man said, Satan Got A Hard On For You...

PS always great to hear Keef's "Happy" ๐Ÿ‘

Number eleven in an occasional series, "Patto meets his musical heroes".

Today we meet James DePrato, an amazingly gifted guitarist based in San Francisco, California, best known as Chuck Prophet's sparring partner in The Mission Express (and other CP-related outfits), and super-busy session player.

James was a young, fresh-faced, heavy metal kid when he first started touring with The Mission Express. Chuck joked that he ordered a shredder from Amazon and the next day James turned up on a skateboard ๐Ÿ˜„

I'm pretty sure that my first sighting of James was at Fibbers in York, 2003 or maybe The New Roscoe in Leeds around the same time? Certainly well over twenty years ago, and it seems that James hasn't aged a day since! Over the years James has proven himself to be a masterful sideman who always plays the right part for the song, from crunchy rhythm, sparkling jangle, atmospheric lap steel, or red-hot, blazing solos.

Some of my very best live music experiences have been in the company of The Mission Express, particularly the line-up with James duelling with Chuck up front, and Kevin T White on bass, Vicente Rodriguez on drums, and Miss Stephanie Finch on keys - what a band ๐Ÿ”ฅ

I believe that James celebrates his birthday today so it's a fine opportunity to raise a glass to a remarkable musician, all-round nice guy, and probably the finest slide player this side of Brother Duane.

Cheers James ๐Ÿป

Gig 53/26 - up to Newcastle for an evening with Kristin Hersh at Cluny 2.

Two stripped-back sets of material from Kristin's solo and Throwing Muses days - understated, but still weird (in a good way!) ๐Ÿ‘

Just watched 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go', a very cool mini-documentary on the current Sunderland music scene.

The film centres on the rise of ace, noisy, riot-grrrl trio Claudia, and shines a light on the super-supportive, ego-free, cross-generational Sunlun music community, with particular shoutouts to the nurturing roles played by the Young Musicians Project, Pop Recs, The Bunker, Serial Bowl Records, and established bands like Slalom D.

As a bit of an outsider, I'm a big fan of the Sunlun music scene and there's loads of great gigs and events that drag me back up the road on a regular basis. This documentary is a great introduction to anyone who wants to know what all the fuss is about.

Also, I'm well chuffed that the documentary includes a wee clip of live footage that I posted from the magical Claudia/Ash gig at Pop Recs earlier this year, a great night ๐Ÿ‘

You can find the documentary on YouTube, you're not daft ๐Ÿ˜‰

Gig 52/26 - up to Gosforth Civic Theatre for an excellent sellout night of soulful Americana from The Delines, including a thoroughly entertaining solo support set from Seamus Fogarty (seen not long back with This Is The Kit).

I always enjoy my trips up to the Civic Theatre - it's a lovely venue, relaxed vibe, friendly staff, and excellent sound.

A great night and a treat to chat with Willy, Sean and Seamus after the show, and to say hi to Rachel Unthank and Kathryn Williams - all very cool & unassuming folk ๐Ÿ‘

Gig 51/26 - across to Band On The Wall in Manchester for a great night with the twelve-legged heavy ambient groove machine that is Drink The Sea. The band played loads of material from the new record which ramps up the heavy grooves, excellent stuff.

Always good to catch-up with my gig buddy Simon @simonw_tb, and nice to see Barrett Martin at the merch desk and say the quickest of hellos to Peter @rem and Julie @loneladyhq
