I wish I’d realised earlier that my urban sketches don’t actually need a pencil.

Or an eraser.

This one was done with a black ink brush pen at Baddesley Clinton.

Wrong line? I keep going.
Bad proportion? I add another line.
Completely questionable window? YEAH! That’s now MY window.

And that’s where my learning happens — in those unexpected lines and wonky shapes, when the drawing doesn’t quite go to plan.

I stopped for my usual quick urban sketch, but…

I’d just spent time looking at some seriously beautiful paintings at Upton House. For a moment, that familiar little voice kicked in: I’ll never paint like that anyway, so what’s the point?

The urge to sketch was louder. So I sat on the grass, picked up my brush pen and made a very quick black ink urban sketch in a cheap notebook. Nothing remotely comparable to the great masters inside the gallery.

And I think there’s something quite important in that.

Sometimes loving yourself is simply overwriting the scripts you’ve been handed — the ones that say you’re not good enough, it’s not worth doing unless you can do it brilliantly, you don’t have enough time, you should be doing something more useful…

Needed 4 minutes for this usk

I used to think I needed proper time to make a mark, make art. Now I seem quite happy with whatever turns up.

Here it was four minutes at the palace, a brush pen filled with ink, a cheap sketchbook and a child counting windows beside me.

Not exactly a peaceful artist retreat. But perhaps that’s the point.

I don’t want my art to exist separately from my life. I want it to remember the life I’m actually living.

A quick urban sketch on a family day.
A few wonky windows that the boy tried to count for me as if it mattered and somehow, that’s enough.

I paused at this photo and made a quick sketch.

Sometimes you take a photo because you want to remember the moment. Then you sketch it with ink because apparently remembering it once wasn’t enough.

A few minutes with a brush pen in an old book before Inktober properly kicks off.

Would you still make art if nobody could ever see it?

I’ve been thinking about how easily creativity can become another thing we perform. We make something → photograph it → post it → wait to see what it does.

But sometimes I wonder what happens when we remove the witness.

A personal piece painted with cheap acrylics and professional graphite doesn’t need to prove anything.

The making itself can be the experience, not merely the route to an outcome.

What would you still make if nobody ever saw it?

I literally have nothing to say.

Not because nothing happened. Quite the opposite.

Sometimes there’s so much to take in that all I can do is let it sit for a while.

Pictures first. Words later — if they arrive.

I think some things need time to settle before they know what they’re becoming.

For now, this is what I have: a wonderful place, an old radio, and a watercolour sketch.

Same beach. New memories.

I used to spend my summers here. This time I got to show it to my little boy.

Forgot my art supplies, bought the cheapest children’s crayons available.

Ten minutes 🖍️, a fishing boat, a sandy beach and a very strong desire to connect with the moment.

Turns out, the beach didn’t care what I was drawing with.
