Must’ve been Moët…

Iconic moments throughout history featuring champagne celebrations. It had to be Moët & Chandon, surely.

C A R L C O X : T H E L A T I N T H E M E

Design & Art Direction by Neill Furmston

This single was released prior to the launch of the album featuring the space pod, therefore I decided to use a desolate landscape wrapped around the front and back of the sleeve. The photograph was taken in the USA, and reminded my of a possible crash site and location for where the space pod might choose to land.

C A R L C O X : P H U T U R E 2 0 0 0

_ _ _ _ _

The original visual identity for Carl Cox’s Phuture 2000 Album. Designed by Neill Furmston (me) whilst at Definition, 1999. Probably one of my all-time favourite collaborations whilst working in the music industry. The 10 Designers Who Made Me Want to Be a Designer.

A small disclaimer before anyone starts shouting, “But what about…?”

This isn’t my attempt at an all-time Top 10 of graphic design. That would be impossible.

These are simply ten designers (and studios) who had a huge influence on me and the direction my own career took, particularly when I was starting out and working in the music industry.

And the work I’ve chosen isn’t necessarily their best, most famous or most celebrated.

Quite deliberately, I’ve tried to go back to the first piece of their work I remember seeing, the thing that stopped me in my tracks and made me think:

“Wow. Who designed that?”

That feeling has stayed with me throughout my career.

So, in no particular order…

01 / Peter Saville
02 / Neville Brody : @brody_associates
03 / Vaughan Oliver : v23
04 / Mark Farrow : @farrowlondon
05 / Ian Anderson / The Designers Republic : @thedesignersrepublic
06 / David Carson : @davidcarsondesigner
07 / David Crow
08 / Ian Swift / Swifty
09 / Me Company / Paul White
10 / Malcolm Garrett : @beingmalcolmgarrett

01 / Peter Saville
Factory Records, Joy Division and New Order. Saville showed me that a record sleeve could be an object of art, culture and mystery in its own right.

02 / Neville Brody : @brody_associates

From The Face and Arena to his experimental type work and FUSE, Brody made typography feel rebellious, expressive and capable of having an attitude all of its own.

03 / Vaughan Oliver / v23

Through 4AD and his unforgettable work for the Pixies, Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil, Oliver created strange, beautiful visual worlds that somehow seemed to sound like the music they contained. Probably my greatest inspiration during a time working for Sine Records.

04 / Mark Farrow : @farrowlondon

Best known for his long relationship with Pet Shop Boys and extraordinary work for Spiritualized, Farrow showed me the power of restraint, precision and a really bloody good idea.

05 / Ian Anderson / The Designers Republic : @thedesignersrepublic

From Warp Records and Aphex Twin to Wipeout, TDR combined typography, technology, satire and controlled chaos into a visual language that felt like by @furmston.creative.studio

Who is your dream client?

They say never meet your heroes, but could the same be said for brands?

I couldn’t possibly say.

Hi, and Happy Friday, all. I’m back with another Top 10 this week.

Following a recent chat with an old colleague, whilst getting all bleary-eyed about the 90s and 00s (it happens from time to time), I decided to compile my Top 10 list of dream clients, whilst also taking a trip down memory lane and remembering some of my favourite brands I’ve been lucky enough to work with over the years.

In my first agency, we decided to hire a salesperson who promised to help us win our ‘dream clients’. In the agency studio, we all passed around Post-it notes with our lists, each as ambitious and idealistic as the other.

To my amazement, he managed to help us win Penguin Books, Silverstone F1 circuit, and PlayStation, all within the space of a few months.

This was in the days before you had to sign up for a second mortgage and sell a kidney just to win the privilege of designing a website for your third-favourite chocolate bar brand.

Truth be told, looking back, the real dream brands to work with are the individual clients who commission the work.

The ones who put their trust in your ambition and vision.

Those who are prepared to back you up when things get questioned, and go on a journey with you (sometimes an uncertain one), but still stick with it, knowing they can trust the process.

Since moving into in-house roles back in 2019, I’ve had to become that client for the agencies I work with, whilst also relying on internal stakeholders to go on that journey with me.

So, thank you to the clients and the stakeholders, past, present, and future.

Thank you for helping us continually turn dreams into reality.

And now, back to the original question…

Who would make your Top 10?
