TECH TIP! Do you have a Fusion kingpin axle and want to tighten up your kingpin preload? Here’s a step by step guide!

First, it’s worth knowing when you need to make an adjustment. It’s the same process as checking ball joints - jack the axle up enough to get a tire off the ground. Use a pry bar and a block of wood, if needed for leverage, to check for up & down or in & out play in the knuckle. The beauty of kingpin axles is that you can easily tighten up this play. You can also put a pry bar between the knuckle and inner C as well.

The obvious next question is how often do you need to check it. The answer is, it depends - how much you drive it and how hard you wheel it are all factors. This particular Jeep has about 5000 miles on the axles, some hard wheeling, and was due for some tightening. It’s always good to check it when performing regular maintenance.
