Next up for #NationalScienceWeek we are going back to basics with Associate Prof Emma Camp - Team Leader at @future_reefs_lab and co-founder of Coral Nurture Program (CNP).

Emma is going to walk us through all things CNP from nurseries to outplanting and genetic diversity to resilience!

Field recap from two weeks up in sunny Cairns to set up my second study for my masters project @future_reefs_lab @coralnurtureprogram

I will be looking at how coral associated bacterial communities vary between corals outplanted at different depths and characterising the environmental conditions these sites experience. We established environmental loggers and took environmental samples as well as small fragments from each of the outplanted corals with more sampling to come so we are able to track how the microbial communities in these corals adapt over time in their varied depths.

I also was able to assist my supervisor, Dr Paige Strudwick establish her study before an El Niño summer. Fieldwork trips are the most amazing experiences full of endless learning, laughs and memories (and of course lots of science). It is so special to work with and learn from such amazing scientists @pstrud @reef.wanderer @therealseamob

Currently it is all stations go in the lab, analysing the microbial communities within the corals from my Whitsundays study to see what’s happening inside our corals! 🪸🧬🔬 by @future_reefs_lab

First fieldwork at Low Isles for my Master’s project with @future_reefs_lab 🪸.

I’m working on a reciprocal transplant experiment with mangrove-associated “super” corals, heat-tolerant corals that naturally live in stressful environments, and moving these corals as well as reef-associated corals between mangrove and reef habitats to understand how they respond to environmental change. The focus is on how deoxygenation (low oxygen conditions) affects their physiology, especially lipidomics and how their energy reserves and nutrient stores shift under stress.

Also had the chance to support the @coralnurtureprogram and contribute to Dr Christine Roper’s research on heat stress during an expected El Niño summer, helping us better understand how corals respond to heat stress depending on their original environment and where they are transplanted.

Grateful to be part of and learn from such an incredible team of inspiring women in science, Dr Jen Matthews, Dr Paige Strudwick, Dr Christine Roper and Alexander Skeer.

Excited for what’s ahead!

A few snaps from our latest @future_reefs_lab research charter on @wavelengthreefcruises. While @rachelclare3 explored the magical world of coral colour-morphs and how colour shapes coral health and resilience, I established a new trait-focused coral nursery with the goal of tracking how traits vary across time, environment and generation.
Thanks @pstrud for capturing our synchronised diving and underwater headstands

Decoding the silent squeeze-Resolving the threat of ocean deoxygenation to coral resilience.
Future Reefs members @run4coral @hadley__england and @alexandraskeer along with @rachelclare3 have spent a week on @heron_island_research_station exploring how oxygen affects the thermal tolerance of corals.

I am deeply honoured to be named among the Explorers Club EC50 (@the_explorers_club ), “50 People Changing the World” alongside such an inspiring cohort.

Thank you Joe Grabowski for the continued support and for the nomination.

Scientific advancement is built on the work of others and is truly a collaborative endeavour. I am incredibly grateful to the reef communities I have the privilege to work with, and to everyone across science, policy, and industry who is dedicated to advancing coral reef health.

To my team, UTS: University of Technology Sydney, colleagues, and collaborators: thank you. Bring on 2026 and what we can collectively achieve.

Can Hannah find the tactical Olympians of the coral larvae swimming world? 🏊🏼‍♀️

Listen in to hear about Hannah’s interesting PhD research which aims to shed light on the understanding of factors that influence the dispersal of coral larvae.

Comment a 🔬and guess what Hannah was looking at if you watch to the end!

Dear Reef Community,

We can’t wait to welcome you to the Coral Nurture Program Whitsundays (CNPW) Webinar! Together, we’ll take a journey through the Program’s story so far supported through the #ReefIslands Initiative, a @GreatBarrierReefFoundation program, supported by funding from @Lendlease, the Australian Government’s #ReefTrust, the Queensland Government and the Fitzgerald Family Foundation. Together we will be celebrating three years of achievements and partnerships.

Hosted by Dr Paige Strudwick, the webinar will feature talks from Scientists who have conducted their research within CNPW, plus a salt-crusted panel of local legends who form the pillars of our community.

It’s your chance to ask questions, hear stories from the reef, and dive into the successes, lessons learned, and exciting future of the Program through the eyes of the people making it happen.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Warmly,
The Coral Nurture Program Team by @future_reefs_lab
