I’m calling this done - or at least, done in the sense that it’s reached a point where I’m comfortable leaving it as it stands and moving on to other things. I’ve dusted the model in a spray coat of satin clear, then after letting that thoroughly cure, dry-brushed a mixture of Turners Yellow, Periwinkle and Titanium White #josonja acrylics over the bulk of the model, giving it a lighter tone overall without completely covering the work/patina underneath. I had intended to fit a bunch of extra cables on the lower section of the mech, but realised that adding even more components would just start the ‘detailing ball rolling again’ and I’d potentially end up losing another two or three weeks on this build, possibly overdoing it all and making it look a total mess…🤔 There’s nothing to say that I might not revisit that idea later…😄…but for now…I’ll set this Krote aside and put the project to bed. It’s been a great build, and I’ve had a lot of fun. Mistakes were made, but along the way I learnt a few extra things and gained knowledge that I can now transpose onto my next project (the iconic Ma.K/S.F.3.D “AFS” suit 🙂). I’ve always loved these kits, but actually taking the time to build them again (after years of “collecting but not doing”) has been a rewarding experience. No more updates on this one for about a week (at least) as I’m working on another project (under a time limit), plus I need to allow the addition of the chrome painted pistons and springs (see if you can spot them 😀) to cure properly before I can finalise the weathering (for the chrome I used my “Molotow: The Original”liquid chrome paint marker…very nice!). Decals selected from my stash have also been applied, though I may add more later. There’s some power cabling looms I’m working on that’ll go on the underside of the mech, which I’ve left off up until now to allow me to paint and weather the model without them being in the way. It may end up being overkill, but I’m having fun with this and I’m pretty sure that’s the whole point to Ma.K (or any other) kits anyway! 😄 #scifimodels #molotowmarkers #josonjapaints #maschinenkrieger #kowyokoyama by @futuremechanicalnet

With fresh eyes in the morning, I’ve pulled back the severity of the weathering session from last night, dry brushing on a misty haze of ‘Turners Yellow’ mixed with ‘Periwinkle’ (#josonjaspaints acrylic), which diffuses the stark rusted and scratched areas of the turret and reintroduces a sun-faded tone to the subject. It’s subtle, but effective 🙃🙂 So far, I’ve only managed to snap off one (very small) part, but as it wasn’t structural or integral to the overall look of the piece, I’m accepting the loss and letting it go (that, and the fact that I’ve now dropped the piece and can’t find it 🤣😅). #maschinenkrieger #kowyokoyama #scifimodels #mecha by @futuremechanicalnet

Krote TW-47 turret weathering begins 😀 I try to treat my models as if they were real-world objects, so that includes going to all the effort of painting (with acrylics) the entire vehicle/subject ‘pre-environmentally affected’, only to then strip back those carefully applied layers with alcohol-inks, methylated spirits and harsh scrubbing with crappy brushes, effectively ‘etching away’ the previous work to reveal the mottled primer coats underneath: the technique isn’t very forgiving, and it’s somewhat difficult to control totally, but that’s what I like about the process - it makes it feel more ‘organic and natural’ rather than being something artificially orchestrated. Obviously there is a certain level of artifice involved when using this technique, as I’m working with plastic, yet attempting to make it ‘look like metal’ (or at least, “not look like plastic” 😅), but by relinquishing absolute control and allowing this method to take over, it frees me from the position of being ‘the builder’ and moves me across, side-stepping if you will, into the perspective of the observer as I watch the inks and methylated spirits do their thing…a very enjoyable experience…☺️ #weatheringmodels #maschinenkrieger #alcoholink #scifimodels by @futuremechanicalnet

As requested @gavin_cross_au here’s my 1/20th scale T.W-47 Krote 🙂 This kit fought me all the way, and I dropped far too many pieces on the shed floor than I care to admit, but in the end I managed to battle my way through to arrive at something I’m happy with - still more painting and weather to go of course, though progress has picked up considerably compared to the slow initial stages of construction. There’s a fair bit of modification to the original kit going on (that’s standard with Ma.K kits, right? 😅), including leg and feet armour upgrades, detailed additions to the turret side motor, extended decking on the hip assembly plus a completely reworked forward weapons system (with the kit’s original Gatling gun being replaced with more refined and precise laser guns). Hey @thehitokiribattosai - this one’s for you mate 😌 Scratchbuilt/kitbash spaceship (somewhere between 1/1700th and 1/2400th scale I’m guessing?), “…sporting three main gun turrets (one on the top deck, with two underneath the vessel), plus one small turret on the bow as well as a smaller set of secondary guns directly underneath). Four main thrusters (mounted at the rear, on the two large engine pods) propel the ship through space…🙂 There are also two communication jamming pylons situated on both the port and starboard sides of the vessel, which assist in scrambling enemy targeting electronics, effectively acting as rudimentary ‘shields’ for the bridge and main crew areas of the ship…” ☺️The build consisted of various parts from small N-Scale train models, Gundam mobile suit bits, large gun turrets lifted from 1/1000th scale Xabungle “Iron Gear” kits, military truck and trailer parts, plus a whole bunch of other components from a multitude of different kits/sources. I’ve tried to maintain a believable level of detail without going too overboard and I think, from a suitable distance, the effect works well. The paintwork is layered with acrylics (Jo Sonja paints) and alcohol inks over a coat of flat-black enamel primer (ie: budget spray can). I prefer to do most of my ‘vehicle/spaceship’ models in black primer (as the base coat) as I find it helps with the tone of the acrylics on top (but this is of course just a personal preference 🙂). Overall, I’m pleased enough with how it’s turning out, with the alcohol inks adding a bit of grime and weathering to the vessel without messing up the sense of scale with oversized chipping effects (something you just wouldn’t see from a distance on a vessel this size, if it were real). I’ll try and do an accurate part count later, but for now it’s sitting somewhere around the 200-250 mark 🤔 Just a little more paintwork to go, a couple of decals and a display stand…and then she’s all yours @thehitokiribattosai 🙃 My gift to you for your recent loss and as a way of thanking you for your continued friendship throughout the years mate 😌🙏 #scratchbuildingmodels #spaceshipmodel #shiptember #originalscifimodel #josonja by @futuremechanicalnet

Monocycle scratch-build in 1/20th scale (or thereabouts). Kinda drawing on the cycles from “Venus Wars” with a bit of “Spiral Zone” thrown in too. The bike started with the main body of an ARII 1/100th scale “Destroid Spartan” (from ‘Macross’), with wheels from a Tamiya military jeep kit (or possibly the Quad car, I’m not sure 🤔), with the handle bars from (I think) a 1/24th scale “Flosser Spiral Flow” hover-bike vehicle (from ‘Heavy Metal L-Gaim’), plus bits and pieces from various other sources (those lovely armour side plates are components from a disassembled cassette player 😊). The hardest part was adding the brake cables on the handlebars (mainly because I added them AFTER I’d already glued them into place 😅). Still a bit to go with the paint job, but after applying several layers in different colours, and then pulling them back with alcohol inks (and scrubbing the model with a stiff brush dipped in methylated spirits), it seems to be tracking along nicely. Whilst I’ve missed the deadline to submit my ‘final piece’ for the #paintonplasticmakcomp2025 - and my 1/76th scale ‘Nutrocker’ conversion isn’t anywhere near completed - I’ve put far too much effort in to simply abandon this build just because the competition has ended, so I’m going to keep on-board with this project until it’s reached a point that I’m truly happy with it…🙂 There’s still a lot I want to do with this little kit and if nothing else the competition has given me the drive to tackle this project with enthusiasm and excitement (so in that sense, I feel I’ve already ‘won’ 🙂). I’ve had a lot of fun with this, more than I had anticipated working within this scale, and I want to do it justice by seeing this through to the end. Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement and support throughout this project - I’ll keep the updates coming and hopefully produce something that will inspire others (or at least be something of interest to look at 😅😜). It’s down to the wire with only a couple of days left to complete my 1/76th scale ‘Nutrocker’ kit for the #paintonplasticmakcomp2025 😅. Originally, I thought of having this version of the vehicle ‘grounded’ and abandoned, but after looking at the kit’s bottom plate (which depicts the hover fan details), I decided I wasn’t going to neglect the underside of this vehicle, and have gone ahead on detailing the underside a little more, with an idea in mind that may or may not work…but I’m gonna give it a try anyway…🙂 #maschinenkrieger #paintonplasticmakcomp2025_gallery #sf3doriginal #nutrocker #kowyokoyama by @futuremechanicalnet
