What happened to Jane Doe at Cornell University, and to so many others on college campuses across the country, is deeply distressing and unacceptable.

But there’s one thing it isn’t: inevitable.

According to media reports, Jane Doe was failed at multiple levels, from the perpetrators to the university’s response, local law enforcement, and bystanders who allegedly knew about the assault but did nothing.

Preventing violence means addressing the harmful attitudes that enable it and understanding why men use violence and why others remain silent when they witness it.

Jesse Mahler, Public Education Program Manager at Futures Without Violence, explores what we can learn from the Cornell allegations and the steps we can take to create lasting change on college campuses.

Today is Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day!

Sponsored by Futures Without Violence, HCADV Day shines a spotlight on the powerful link between domestic violence and health. It brings healthcare providers and advocates together to support survivors and strengthen prevention efforts, because domestic violence is a healthcare issue.

Healthcare providers play a crucial role in supporting survivors every day. Over 3/4 of domestic violence survivors talk to their healthcare providers about their experiences of abuse, highlighting the importance of compassionate, survivor-centered care. 💚

We are heartbroken by the devastating acts of domestic violence and gun violence that took the lives of multiple people over the weekend in Pennsylvania, Georgia, and California. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the communities grieving these unimaginable losses.

These tragedies are a painful reminder of the deadly intersection of domestic violence and firearms. When an abusive partner has access to a gun, the risk of homicide increases significantly.

We do not have to live this way. These tragedies are not inevitable, and there are steps we can take to prevent domestic violence homicides. Strengthening protections that keep firearms out of the hands of abusers and ensuring survivors have access to safety and support can save lives.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month and every day, we honor the lives lost and reaffirm our commitment to preventing violence and building a future without violence, where everyone can live free from fear.

If you are concerned about your safety or someone else’s, confidential support is available through the National Domestic Violence Hotline:

Recent events remind us just how important it is to have ongoing conversations about consent and our shared responsibility to prevent sexual violence.

Consent isn’t a one-time yes. It’s a continuous conversation!

Remember the 4 C’s of consent:
💬 Clear
♻️ Continuous
🧠 Conscious
🚫 Coercion-free

Don’t assume. Don’t pressure. Ask, listen, and respect the answer, every time!

☎️ If you or someone you know needs help, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE (4673)

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we’re raising awareness of the violence experienced by Native and Indigenous women and girls and the barriers they face in accessing support.

Native and Indigenous women and girls who are victims of violence are more likely to experience injuries that require medical treatment and are less likely to be able to access needed services than non Native or non Indigenous women.

Futures Without Violence works with Native and Indigenous partners and advocates to build safety and strengthen support for survivors.

On International Day of the Girl Child, Oct. 11, the world is bringing attention to the urgent need to end child marriage and invest in girls’ rights!

It’s imperative because:
👉 One in five girls globally is married before age 18, and
👉 Approximately 640 million women and girls alive today were married as children.

Girls have told us they want to stay in school, pursue their dreams and goals, and not be child brides. Ending child marriage takes laws, schools, health services, and girls’ own leadership. It also takes boys and men who see a girl’s future as worth protecting.
