I’m really looking forward to returning to the Framework Knitters Museum for another workshop! @fwkmuseum

This time we’ll be exploring Ruddington’s framework knitting and stocking industry with mixed-media collage. Starting with a short tour of the museum, giving us the opportunity to look at the original framework knitting machines and cottages for inspiration before we start making.

You’ll then create your own piece using a wooden frame and pieces of knitted sock or tights, building up layers of fabric, paper, thread and other materials. You’ll have the chance to add stitching and details inspired by the patterns, machinery and materials of the industry, creating a unique piece to take home.

📅 14th November
⏰ 12.30–4pm
📍 Framework Knitters Museum, Chapel St, Ruddington, Nottingham NG11 6HE
Book by visiting www.frameworkknittersmuseum.org.uk/events or via the link in my bio.

Suitable for adults and older teens. Some basic sewing experience is recommended, and all materials are provided.

I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone creates!

Our next Framework Music Night is fast approaching with "A different Thread".

Alicia Best from the US and Robert Jackson from the UK met while busking on the cobbled streets of Ireland and discovered both a musical and personal harmony that was serendipitous.

In the decade since forming A Different Thread, Best and Jackson have taken their act on the road, touring over a dozen countries, and winning numerous awards.

Their sound is transcontinental, blending Jackson’s British folk rock background with Best’s North Carolina-bred alt-country melodies.

Join us on Saturday 10 October at 7pm.

Tickets are £8.50 and available to book online via our website www.fwk.org.uk

We are grateful for the support from Ruddington Village Community Partnership for this event. by @fwkmuseum

What has cricket got to do with Framework Knitting?

Well our pop up exhibition will enlighten you!

As part of Heritage Open Days 2026, FWK have partnered with trentbridge, the home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, to create a display exploring the unique relationship between sport and knitting.

Available to view until 10 October in our Chapel Gallery.

Please do call ahead to check availability if travelling specifically to see the exhibition as the Chapel is a shared space and maybe booked. We’d hate to disappoint.

As part of Heritage Open Days 2026 we are offering a FREE book talk - From Ruddington to Cromford.

Writer Deborah Elliott, who is passionate about her family history and helping others to unlock their own family stories, presents this fascinating talk about her framework knitting ancestors, the Price Family.

A tale encapsulated in her book From Ruddington to Cromford, encompassing Nottinghamshire, the Peak District and even Florence Nightingale.

Deborah’s talk features local actors Sarah Burton and Leo Lanzoni reading extracts from her book.

This talk is now fully booked but you can find copies of Deborah’s book for sale in the shop. by @fwkmuseum

Imagine finding out your name had been put on a list, and you were expected to patrol the streets from sunset until sunrise.

On 20 March 1812, during a period of serious unrest in and around Nottingham, this Act of Parliament was passed to strengthen the ancient duties of watching and warding.

Its opening lines describe “disorderly Persons” assembling in a “riotous and tumultuous Manner”, using “Force and Violence”, destroying property and endangering lives.

The timing was no coincidence. The Luddite disturbances had begun in Nottinghamshire in 1811, as textile workers protested against falling wages and changes to their trade. By early 1812, masked and armed groups were breaking stocking frames around Nottingham, while magistrates, constables and soldiers tried to contain the unrest.

This Act gave local magistrates considerable powers. Men could be placed on lists and required to keep watch “every Night from Sun-set until Sun-rise”. If there were not enough, others could be called upon. Special constables could be appointed. Offences under the Act could result in imprisonment and hard labour.

Perhaps the most striking part comes at the very end.
The Act actually supplied the wording of the notice that could be served:

“TAKE Notice, That your Name is inserted in the List…”

More than two centuries later, this rather unassuming piece of printed legislation gives us a glimpse of what political and industrial unrest could mean at street level, not just for politicians and protesters, but for ordinary people suddenly expected to keep watch through the night.
