“be young and shut up”

For the past week, French students have been putting blockages around their high schools to address the country’s crumbling education system. They want more teachers, renovated schools, and better support.

As a response, the French government is sending anti-riot police to beat them up. One student got his teeth broken. Over 1000 children were arrested in the past week.

Tear gas everywhere, police dogs, batons, the scenes are absolutely horrifying. Once again, the right to protest, which is a cornerstone of democracy, is not respected. Brutalising children for standing up for themselves causes physical but also emotional harm and trauma.

We stand in full support with the high school students in France fighting for their future. Let them protest. by @fyeg

This is Oleshky in Ukraine. The city has been cut off by Russia since May, with no food or medical supplies coming in. 2000 people are starving.

European governments need to use every diplomatic channel to secure access to resources for the people of Oleshky and ensure a safe evacuation for those who wish to leave. Stop the war in Ukraine.

Imagine you live your whole life in a place. Then a “developer” buys your appartement building, raises your rent and gets you evicted. This is what happened to soon-to-be 88 year old Maricarmen in Madrid yesterday.

She is not alone.

Across Europe, there are many Maricarmens. People cannot afford to live anymore, renters’ rights aren’t protected, and housing has become a lucrative business in the hands of a few companies.

Stop corporate hoarding of residential properties, housing is a human right.

Despite what the European Parliament says, no one is illegal.

🔻 Today, the right wing majority in the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the humanitarian crisis in Ceuta. Calling out an “invasion”, this text further dehumanises people, including minors and calls for accelerating returns, which is a clear breach of international law.

Freedom of movement should be considered a human right. Europe must become a safe haven for people seeking refuge and the humane treatment of migrants and refugees upon and after their arrival must be ensured, in particular access to sufficient food, clean and safe drinking water, and healthcare.

No one is illegal.
Abolish Frontex.

All talk, no action. That’s the takeaway from the president of the European Commission’s “big speech” on the future of Europe.

Yesterdays’ crackdown on LGBTQIA+ people and organisations in Turkey is persecution, plain and simple.

At least 47 people have been detained in coordinated raids targeting activists, LGBTQIA+ associations and businesses across 15 provinces. This is not about “protecting family values” or safeguarding children. It is about intimidating a community, silencing civil society and making LGBTQIA+ existence a target of the state.

LGBTQIA+ people have the right to live openly, organise freely and exist without fear of arrest or intimidation.

This is not protection. This is persecution. LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights. And silence is not an option.
