It would take a MUCH longer caption to tell the full story of how this piece came together. And even now, the story isn’t finished. The music is still becoming. 🥹

DAY TWO of my music residency at @dukeuniversity.

This is “Precious Morning,” a completely new composition and reimagining inspired by the spiritual O Morning Star and the beloved hymn Precious Lord.

We’re here developing music for the @dukearts commission and world premiere of SACRED SPACES, created alongside my collaborator and cocreator, the one and only @matthewrushing73.

The full piece currently sits somewhere around eight or nine minutes. This clip begins around the third verse and takes you through the latter part of where the composition stands today.

And I’m already dreaming about what happens when our featured vocalists @jhoriahnaemusic @dany_yvonne and @tamieyah arrive and bring their voices into this world. 😮‍💨🙌🏽

Watch until the end and you’ll even hear me talking through a little of the composing and arranging process with the band.

And MY GOD TODAY, THIS BAND. 🥹😭✨🙌🏽

@jonahsmithmusic @g3__music @joshmick_23 and the absolute legend @barontymas.

We first started playing together during my Duke residency in April, and I’m incredibly grateful we were able to bring this exact group of North Carolina musicians back together.

You’ll hear why. 🥹

One of the things I’m really enjoying about this residency is sharing the process a little more honestly.

The rough cuts.
The missed notes.
The beautiful mistakes.
The moments where something unexpected happens and suddenly becomes part of the piece.

I don’t always share this part. I think I used to feel like everything had to be finished before it could be seen.

Maybe I’m just 35. 😂

But lately, I’m enjoying being a little less precious about the process and letting you see the work while it’s still becoming.

Still developing.
Still listening.
Still becoming.

Here’s where “Precious Morning” lives today. ✨
