RG: #ovoicemannn Citizen Kane, the legendary Scarborough, Toronto hip-hop duo made up of Jeff “J-Spade” Duke and Rob “Blye” Paris, emerged in the 1990s and became an important part of the foundation of Canadian hip-hop. Coming out of Scarborough’s independent rap scene, the duo built their reputation through strong lyricism, creativity, authenticity, and a commitment to representing their community.
Citizen Kane released “Soul Survivor” in 1995 before following up with The Epic in 1997 and Deliverance in 1999. Their music earned national recognition, with the duo receiving JUNO Award nominations for Rap Recording of the Year. Their independent approach also reflected the challenges faced by Canadian hip-hop artists trying to build careers and audiences at a time when the Canadian rap industry was still developing.
Their story became the focus of the National Film Board of Canada documentary Raisin’ Kane: A Rapumentary, which followed Citizen Kane at a major turning point in their career as they worked to be heard and establish themselves in the Canadian music industry.
More than just a rap group, Citizen Kane represents Scarborough’s contribution to Canadian hip-hop history. Their determination, independent mindset, and dedication to the culture helped create a path for future generations of Toronto artists. Their name remains connected to an important era when Toronto hip-hop was building its identity and fighting for national recognition.

During the course of building this new album , @lezeppo and I connected a few times and practiced with @djversatilehiphop . We needed to come correct on stage and build that authentic chemistry with the DJ … while practicing the set , Verse hit us with the ‘Verse Test’ aka the ‘Trials of Versatility’ .. this involves having our expected next up instrumental being replaced at certain points of the set with an unexpected instrumental from DJ Versatile’s crates , we had enough fun with it that we incorporated the ‘Verse Test’ into the show

At this show in Barrie opening for @myerclarity and @freshkils , we ran three rounds .. respect to the audience 🙏🏼 you really came with that energy , much love

What we have here is about half of one round of the verse test .. for this one we rocked on ‘Big’ by Canadian legends BrassMunk .. produced by Mr. Attic of Da Grassroots by @g5cu
