Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

This year's theme: Synergizing A.I, Social Science, STEM and Finance: Building Inclusive Futures for Women and Girls.

Inclusive futures are not built by technology alone, but by making sure that women and girls own tools to enhance their work, have a seat at the table to amplify their voices and ensure their demands are met. By so doing science and innovation will shape not just climate solutions but create socio-economic empowerment for them. by @g_gsdn

At the just concluded Look Beyond Oil Conference convened by @lincgreen_ and @janikobafoundation which held on 5th June to commemorate #WorldEnvironmentDay, I was a guest speaker at the Green Room with Hauwa Abubakar

Our conversation on Environmental Pollution in the Niger Delta was a timely one, in respect to the challenges faced by Niger Delta communities as a result of our anthropogenic activities, which has led to;

🌊 flood cases,

🎏the ingestion of plastics by aquatic species (fishes etc) which is carcinogenic (cancer causing) and affects the health of humans as revealed by scientists,

🏞 And other crisis in rural and coastal communities across the Niger Delta.

I spoke on adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle by all stakeholders, the power of education and influence, and setting up a task force to ensure compliance of citizens to enacted policies.

Full session video can be seen on YouTube using this link or link in bio: https://youtu.be/3sMsIf8z9qA?si=mkMZEZAPp6dQqwBV

On this #WorldEnvironmentDay it saddens my heart that the Niger Delta Communities of Nigeria are still faced with Oil Spillage crisis up until this moment. These issues are no longer stories we heard as children but real life issues we are confronted with as adults. Nothing seems to have changed over the last 2 decades, rather the situation increases at an alarming rate.

What's the way forward for the Niger Delta Communities and the Oil spillage crisis:
- Should Oil be left under the ground?
- How does Nigeria ensure that while mining natural resources for the development of the country, she's is also preserving her environment and the lives and cultural heritage of her citizens, for future generations to come experience?
- How can Nigeria Look Beyond Oil in providing development for the country.
- How do we ensure that profit is not made at the expense of people and the planet.

In or around Port Harcourt, Nigeria, join me and other environmental experts at the venue as shown on the flyer and let's discuss these critical issues.

Not in Port Harcourt, that's not a problem as you can join us online via the livestream on YouTube, using the link below.

On Thursday 22nd May, 2025 we Grassroots to Global Sustainable Development Network paid a visit to Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) facilities alongside other youth led Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Rivers State

Our founder IBISO IKIROMA-OWIYE @ib_henshaw and program manager Paschal Epere @kellyvi1993 took a tour around HYPREP's facilities, and planted a Mangrove seedling which was symbolic in affirming our support for the ongoing Mangrove Restoration Project. They also engaged with staff and the labour (skilled and unskilled) across the various sites, which were;

🌱 Mangrove Planting Site - Bomu Creek

🏫 Centre of Research and Excellence- Wiiyakara, Khana L.G.A

🚰 Water Scheme - Kporghor/Gio and all the LGAs

🏥 Health Care Centre/Ogoni Specialist Hospital - Taaba, Bodo

🏞 Bioremediation site- Ogale, Eleme

The visit to HYPREP facility provided a clear understanding of the scope and progress of HYPREP activities in Ogoni communities. Young climate leaders from various organizations were able to not just see the ongoing projects across the various Local Government Areas in Ogoni but were able to interact with the field staff across the various project areas.

This open interaction further provided details of the projects, the timelines for the project, progress made, challenges faced and the overall outcome and expected impact of the project on not just the communities but the country as well. All questions asked by the young climate leaders were answered by the staff and head of communications who ensured that they received answers to their questions. The HYPREP team showed good hospitality and ensured the security of all participants. The youth leaders commended the beautiful work done by HYPREP led by the project coordinator Prof. NENIBARINi ZABBEY.

However, in the observation and criticism of our young leaders, there seems to be a negligence by the Federal Government in putting an end to the operations of all oil companies whose activities still causes oil spills as a result of refusal to repair and maintain broken pipelines. This strict action if taken up by the Federal Government will bring to an end further oil spill. by @g_gsdn

On this Africa Day 2025, I celebrate Africa for her resilience and I make this call to our African Leaders to take bold steps towards ensuring peace and development in the African Continent.

Our leaders must awaken to the fact that we have so much in the African continent, so much resources to generate the revenue we need for her to thrive.
We must recognize the ability of our problems in Africa to not just remain as problems but become a means to unlocking opportunities for us as a continent.

Today I applaud the strength and courage of Africa's youth in driving transformation which is instrumental in fostering development across the continent.
