I crafted this piece from June-September of last year. This piece explores the dichotomy of joy and pain and how that manifests both emotionally and physically. “Still Rising” reflects the hard truths of living in a society where our community is constantly the target of prejudice and violence. This piece is a testament to the resilience and strength of Black people and our ability to rise, even when the world feels heavy. This piece is very dear to me, and I’m super grateful to have grown with it this year.

I performed this piece at the International Association of Blacks in Dance 35th Annual Conference and Festival on behalf of @umich_dance . I also performed in the adjudication concert and final gala at American College Dance Association’s @acda_dance (ACDA) East Central Conference representing @umich_dance

I’m grateful for my piece to have been selected as the #1 East Central Conference Alternate for ACDA’s National College Festival happening this weekend in Washington, DC. The East-Central Conference adjudicators Shani Collins, Rainy Demersen, Mark Haim commended the strength of my work with the following remarks: “A soaring spirit and devotional passion. With seamless precision, this work asks us to think about the body as a vessel.”

I’m super grateful for the support of @umich_dance @kararosedance @charliisananimal, @achavasse and @louisville_churchgirl in the creative process and performance of this piece.

I’m so grateful to have received an Honorable Mention in the modern/contemporary category for YoungArts. I really didn’t expect to be awarded anything, and I’m so appreciative of the opportunity. Thank you so much to @branndileww for being the best modern teacher and for choreographing my solo. I couldn’t have asked for a greater person to further my dance training and have a good time with. Thank you @youngarts and congratulations to all the winner this year!! by @gabby_glk

Meet @umich_dance’s @gabby_glk (BFA ’27, dance; BA ’27, international studies) who explains that studying at SMTD has enabled her not just to expand her physical range and refine her technique, but to develop her own artistic voice. Pursuing dual degrees in dance and international relations, Gabrielle acknowledges that the Perry Kasper Granoff Scholarship has helped her take advantage of a multifaceted education at @uofmichigan.
