Christ of Dixie is the Civil War reenactment that Norman Rockwell forgot to paint: the Fort Pillow Massacre of 1864. Commandeered by Confederate Major General Nathaniel Bedford Forrest, there were anecdotal reports of United States Colored Troops being crucified in the aftermath*. This was Later dismissed in the south as war propaganda, but NBF would go on to quiet the controversy by founding the KKK.
