New on the Revue — A Brief History of Décollage by Gabriel Allred, Ph.D.

This week Collé publishes Gabriel Allred’s essay A Brief History of Décollage, examining how a practice that began with artists pulling posters from city walls evolved into a broader method of interrogating consumer culture, collective memory, and the politics embedded in everyday materials. In tracing this evolution, Allred positions décollage not simply as a technique, but as a way of thinking through the social lives of images.

From wheatpasted city walls to the Venice Biennale, Allred traces décollage, the art of removal, from Rotella’s torn Roman posters through Vostell’s Fluxus happenings to Mark Bradford’s merchant-poster reckonings with class and race. A history of deconstruction, both physical and political.

ISSUE NO. 159 • GABRIEL ALLRED

Gabriel Allred came to the studio from cognitive psychology, and that disciplinary training continues to shape his practice. His silkscreen-based collages layer personal photographs with found imagery, holding grief, commerce, and transit in open conversation. The work is autobiographical without veering into sentiment; it's more concerned with the mechanics of attention, how it drifts in and out of our consciousness, and what gets caught along the way. @gabriel_allred_

Gabriel Allred Ph.D., is a multidisciplinary artist and former behavioral researcher. His recent work explores autobiographical themes and contemporary issues (e.g., immigration, late-stage capitalism, identity, class). His collage work is heavily grounded in silkscreen printing. Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, he spent much of his formative years as a satellite in his father’s sculpture studio. Gabriel studied psychology, earning a Ph.D. with a specialization in human cognition. Possessing a rather nuanced understanding of human cognition alongside sensation and perception, he uses this knowledge in his own artistic practice - utilizing his imagery to conjure implicit themes and concepts. He has also created a number of digital media projects alongside artist and collaborator Keil Corcoran of the band STRFKR. Zinemaking is also a part of Gabriel’s practice, an extension of his photography.

When asked how š˜šš˜¶š˜Æš˜“š˜µš˜³š˜¶š˜¤š˜¬ resonates with his art practice, Gabriel Allred said this:

ā€œMarx used the sun as a metaphor for human self-actualization, stating that we ā€œmust revolve around (ourselves) as (our) own true Sun.ā€ Institutions can serve as the ā€œillusoryā€ sun that revolves around us when we do not learn to shine upon ourselves. The sun in my piece and practice serves as a beacon to shine light on falsehood and reject illusions, often illusions perpetuated by institutions in service of capital gain. I reflect my own truth upon the viewer’s gaze in my selection of imagery - just as the sun removes the darkness of the old, sometimes oppressive, ideas of the past.ā€œ taken in Downtown Bentonville by @gabriel_allred_

On view now through the end of August! 🟄 Some* House Art featuring work by @gabriel_allred_

About the Show 🟄 This show highlights a selection of mixed media works produced by Gabriel over the last year incorporating silkscreened images, acrylic, and paper ephemera.

The title references a selection of the works within the show, unmounted canvas works called tenugui (ꉋꋭ恄). Tenugui are multipurpose cotton fabrics in Japan, sometimes used to wrap a bento box or carried as a handkerchief. These colorful decorative fabrics are also found hung like small tapestries in many Japanese homes. Some* House Art features Gabriel’s interpretation of the tenugui, not on traditional cotton, but on unstretched artist canvas.

John Baldessari once said: ā€œEvery artist should have a cheap line. It keeps art ordinary and away from being overblown.ā€ Sharing this ethos, the tenugui within the show represent Gabriel’s ā€œcheap line;ā€ affordable works and hangable in a home.

Yall don’t want to miss this show! Come see Gabe’s work before the end of the month! Everything in the show is available for purchase, and we’re happy to ship. Reach out with any questions!

A selection of photos of my current show: ā€œSome* House Artā€ at Kaleidoscope Collective (@shopkaleidoscopecollective) on view now until the end of August.

The new mixed media work pictured center: ā€œWet Paint (Names)ā€ includes a screenprinted image from the Rohwer Internment Camp during World War II next to an image from a present day ICE detention facility. These two focal points are surrounded by images of commerce and transit from my own photography, signaling contrasting levels of personal agency present day and historically. by @gabriel_allred_
