A glimpse into our workshop in Obepare, a Waorani community in the Ecuadorian Amazon, where women from different Waorani communities journeyed through the jungle to explore the creative possibilities of combining tagua with traditional chambira weaving.

Conceived and organized by @essentially.mindful , and funded through proceeds from our Jaguar tote sales, this workshop brought together materials, techniques, and knowledge in a meaningful creative exchange.

An experience close to my heart, reflecting why I founded Essentially Mindful: to connect people, honor ancestral craftsmanship, and create new possibilities through collaboration.

One of the most meaningful parts of our time in Obepare was everything we shared beyond the creative process.

While exploring the possibilities of combining tagua with traditional chambira weaving, we also exchanged knowledge, stories, and experiences.

What began as an exploration of materials became a beautiful cultural exchange, rooted in curiosity, mutual learning, and the joy of creating together.

Nancy Guiquita, president of the Obepare community, esteemed leader and Kenguiwe monitor of the forest, alongside the ladies who gathered for our workshop.

The Dayuma Bag, named in honor of historic Waorani leader Dayuma Caento, mother of Nancy Guiquita.

Handwoven in chambira by her descendants in Obepare, it features a tagua charm crafted by artisans on Ecuador’s coast, bringing together ancestral knowledge and craftsmanship from two distinct regions.

I’m Gabriela, founder of Essentially Mindful.

What began as a deep appreciation for Ecuador’s natural materials and ancestral craftsmanship has grown into a design studio that works directly with artisan communities across the country.

Together, we create pieces that preserve generations of knowledge while finding their place in a contemporary world. Every collection is the result of trust, collaboration, and countless hours of skilled hands transforming natural fibers into objects with meaning.

Essentially Mindful exists to honor the people behind each piece, celebrate where they come from, and prove that craftsmanship, when valued with intention, can shape a more thoughtful future.

Trabajar en colaboración con artesanas mujeres de gran talento es una experiencia que transforma. Cada encuentro se vuelve un puente donde las ideas fluyen, se entrelazan y se convierten en algo más grande que la suma de sus partes. En ese espacio compartido, la colaboración construye y une: une manos, une historias y une visiones que encuentran en la creación un lenguaje común.
Ellas, con su maestría y sensibilidad, convierten los materiales en relatos vivos. Su creatividad deja relucir el alma; no solo la propia, sino también la del territorio, la tradición y el momento presente. En cada pieza se siente la dedicación, la paciencia y el orgullo de un oficio que se comparte con generosidad.
Cuando trabajamos juntas, aprendemos a escuchar, a mirar despacio y a valorar la belleza que nace del diálogo. La artesanía se vuelve entonces una forma de encontrarnos, de honrar nuestras raíces y de proyectar hacia el futuro una manera más humana y consciente de crear. Es en esa unión donde florece la verdadera magia: el arte hecho en comunidad.
