“It’s not rocket science” is something people say when something is supposed to be simple.

Something I’ve unfortunately had to learn is nothing about a world without you in it is simple. You, the rocket scientist yourself, are gone.

I’ve been sitting here trying to encapsulate everything you were. Husband, father, friend, rocket scientist. The kind of man who did things people can’t even begin to comprehend.

To me? I was lucky enough to know you as grandpa. And grandpa, there are no words large enough to articulate what that meant to me.

You were my biggest teacher. My biggest believer. My greatest friend. The one person who could I knew I could call to fix anything.

But you can’t fix this. This does in fact feel like rocket science—and I am no rocket scientist.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve looked up to you more than anyone. Not everyone can say their grandpa helped save the nation during the Cold War. I get to. That will forever be one of the coolest things about my life.

But you were so much more than your accomplishments, though there are many.

You’re the man who taught me how to drive.
The man who took me on ice cream runs.
The man who dropped me off to my first date.
The man who pushed me when I needed to be pushed & believed in me more than I’ve ever believed in myself.
The man who had listened to Taylor Swift with me.
The man who teased me for sport.
The man who challenged my way of thinking.
The man who turned every ordinary moment into something extraordinary.

I wanted more time.

I wasn’t finished being your granddaughter.

I’m not ready to live in a world without you.

Yet, I know I can do it because you taught me how to be strong. To be curious. To be smart. To stand my ground. To formulate my own thoughts.

I am a better person because I got to be shaped by you.

It was an honor to know you. To learn from you. To listen to you. To be loved by you.

I will spend the rest of my life missing you.

You being gone is something not even a rocket scientist can fix.
