Act II: The Reception 🎉 Honestly, we’re still on a high from this moment lol. It’s hard to articulate how euphoric this evening was. Everyone was on the same wavelength the entire night, and you could really feel the love in the room. This space was created to not only celebrate this milestone in our lives, but to highlight the connections we’ve made along the way - our journeys individually and collectively. I grew up with elephants in my living room and seeing the Greek letters “ΔΣΘ” on paraphernalia not knowing what they meant, but that they held significance for my mother, aunts, and cousins. Now, I’m three months into membership in Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Incorporated and there is so much I have learned about leading a principle-driven life, working collectively to uplift others, and trusting in the strength of this incredible sisterhood. One of my favorite memories of Jide is when the track team had a long run across campuses and instead of running the full round trip, Jide caught the bus back from Clairmont to Emory. I didn’t plan on running track at Emory, but I joined the team simply because I wanted to spend more time with Jide and Morgan. That time together defined our friendship. Over the years we would speak nearly every day, visit each other in our respective cities, share our hardships and accomplishments. Having such a warm and intimate friendship, we became family.I’ve struggled to find balance on what is now a two-legged stool when there should be three. In what would be our final heart-to-heart, last summer Jide spoke with a newfound maturity. He and I resolved to keep each other accountable, to fuel the relationships and experiences that were fulfilling to us, and to trust in God.To everyone that has reached out, sent prayers, and shared their favorite memories of Jide, thank you. I’ve found comfort in hearing the lasting impression that he left on you all. Jide always made sure to celebrate the people around him and the best way I can honor Jide on J4 and going forward is to find joy; to laugh a little louder, smile a bit broader, dream bigger, and become GM of an NBA franchise.
