an ode to late september commence autumn reading and the annual gilmore girls rewatch (excluding season six) by @gabsshelf
i have simply not been the same person since i finished carmen maria machado’s entirely brilliant, masterful memoir “in the dream house” a few weeks ago. this book has fundamentally changed me and the trajectory of my personhood as a writer, scholar, and human. things are so different for me now because of this book. a rare instance where i am grateful for my ability to feel so deeply. this is more of a love letter than it is a recommendation. the experience that i had reading this showcases the exact power of reading, writing, storytelling that made me fall in love with words to begin with. i’ve been struggling ever since to navigate the book social media space and in reading other books. wipe the planet of all books and this is the one i am choosing forever. if my home went up in flames, i’m running in and saving this. pry it from my dying grip! redundant, i know but just know that moving forward, every book i post about on here in whatever silly ways i do — nothing comes close to touching this book, for me. just know that i remain here. how to move on? how to even begin to express all i am feeling? how to do it without oversharing? how to do it in a way that feels sufficient? how to one day tell my own? how to get there? is it better to speak or to die? nothing i share with you now will ever touch the experience i had here and there, in the dream house. but i hope one day, i can express my own story with you. this marks a shift in the way i will approach and prioritize writing moving forward. i am not exaggerating when i say it is life-changing for me. it is moments of reflection like this that remind me why i am even here. i am certain this book marks the start of a much bigger journey for me — it has completely stopped me in my tracks and in short, i am reconsidering everything. this won’t be the last time you see me gush about this! fucking! book! posting, talking about anything else right now feels entirely disingenuous, though language feels lacking. i need this shit injected into my veins. this memoir was published in 2019 and though in some ways i needed it more then, but i am so grateful it came to me now. a case of divine timing. by @gabsshelf
chapter 25 🤍 it is my twenty fifth birthday and it feels very sentimental to be posting this because it was one year ago today when my boyfriend convinced me to start my bookstagram account!! now look where we are lots of fun posts to come - we are doing a nyc bookstore bar crawl today to celebrate 🥳 by @gabsshelf
how is it already the end of october, and time for ten before the end? madness. here is my ten before the end of 2026, the ten reads i’m hoping (but not optimistic) to finish before the end of the year, i’m not doing too great on my yearly tbr, work & school & managing my worsening endometriosis have really taken priority — i have fell off of ‘the artist’s way’ but see its value and would like to restart the program when i have more time … i apologize to julia cameron starting my sunrise on the reaping reread via audio to prepare for the emotional devastation that will be november 13th what’s on your end of year tbr? 🖤 by @gabsshelf
amidst the season of thought daughtering, i thought i’d pop in to tell you about my two most recent five star reads i’ve read this fall: madonna in a fur coat - sabahattan ali a short, turkish translated novel (1943) that takes longing to another level. i think its best to go in blind but as a little taste to entice you if you haven’t already read: a quiet young man yearns after a woman in a painting he comes across, what we learn is a self-portrait. i’ll leave it at that, but i’ll be thinking about this book forever. gorgeous writing, so thought-provoking, and a beautiful reminder that we live for connection. dead beat - leigh bardugo a stunning finale to my most favorite fantasy series with my favorite found family. rereading ninth house & hell bent before the trilogy finale was really the move. shoutout to @jordanlilyslibrary for inspiring me (always) but especially with this kindle case by @shopbibliophile to help fuel my alex & darlington obsession. it is truly perfect, just like this series. by @gabsshelf

today marks my three year anniversary on bookstagram :’) i love this little safe space i’ve carved on the internet & i love that my account is a virgo — so accurate the way that i overthink every post. after deactivating my regular social media accounts in 2020, i missed being online in a way that brought me joy & abundance. creating this account gave me a safe space & has made me more creative in my everyday life i think it is so cool to be passionate about things & i love sharing that with you all — this account has brought me five star reads, friendships , and so much fun! whether you know me irl or we’ve become booksta besties , thanks for following along my little virtual diary <3 #bookstagram #booksta #booktok #booktalk #bookreviewer by @gabsshelf
