Marina Carr, returns to the Abbey Theatre next week with Mirandolina - her remarkable version of a classic Italian play.

Set in modern-day Dublin, this rich new work examines the life of a young woman working in an Italian restaurant, as she carefully navigates a path between the men who surround and admire her, even as they work to bend her to their will. Armed with courage and intelligence, Mirandolina decides to fight back.

L’AMORE

Questo progetto nasce da una domanda semplice: dove si nasconde l’amore?

Ho imparato a cercarlo nelle piccole cose. Nei ricordi che ci accompagnano, nelle attese che ci cambiano, nelle persone che incontriamo e in quelle che, anche se non ci sono più, continuano a vivere dentro di noi. L’ho trovato nei gesti più semplici, nei silenzi, negli sguardi, in tutto ciò che spesso passa inosservato.

Da questo pensiero nasce L’AMORE. I video raccontano frammenti di questa visione, le immagini ne custodiscono i dettagli, la poesia ne rappresenta il cuore. Le maglie e le borse non sono solo oggetti da indossare, ma il modo di portare con sé una parte di questa storia.

Perché, in fondo, l’amore non è soltanto ciò che riceviamo. È ciò che scegliamo di dare, ciò che continuiamo a cercare e tutto quello che ci rende profondamente umani.

The Irish premiere of Mirandolina at the Abbey Theatre is fast approaching. With a cast of leading Italian actors and an Irish creative team, Marina Carr and Caitríona McLaughlin have re-imagined Carlo Goldoni’s La Locandiera to explore identity, gender, and power as it echoes through the generations.

Translated by Monica Capuani, Mirandolina is performed in Italian with English surtitles and is a co-production by the Abbey Theatre, Teatro Stabile del Veneto – Teatro Nazionale Italy, and Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka – HNK Rijeka.

Questa locandina ha un valore speciale: segna l’incontro tra me e @simone_biavati , artista che sono fiero di poter chiamare, amico, fratello e persona con cui facciamo progetti pazzi fino alla fine del tempo.
Era estate, cercavamo nuvole e riflessi e lui le ha trovate in un istante.

“Oh, she’s born and she’ll leave you in smithereens”

Mirandolina is inspired by Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni’s masterpiece, La Locandiera (1753). Written by Abbey Theatre Associate Artist Marina Carr and directed by Caitríona McLaughlin, Mirandolina examines the life of a young woman and the admirers and predators who surround her.

Having premiered in Italy as part of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Cultural Olympiad, Mirandolina comes to the Abbey Stage this August as part of the cultural programming around Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Mirandolina will be performed in Italian with English surtitles.
