Acrylic on canvas

National Art School final piece!
I spent the last five days at NAS in Module 2 of the HSC intensive painting course, working on a transcription of contemporary and pre-20th century paintings.
I combined two of Abdul Abdullah's works titled 'Self Portrait as Ophelia', and Claude Monet's 'Bridge over a Pond of Lilies'. The woman Ophelia that Abdullah portrayed him self as, is a character from Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' that was driven to madness by the rejection of Hamlet and her accidental murder of her father. Ophelia was in a tree hanging flower garlands, when the branch beneath her broke and she fell into the below brook and drowned. Ophelia's death as well as Abdullahs depiction of her are seen as quite distressing and sad, that's why I wanted to change the context. I took Monet's painting, and placed Abdullah in the pond under the bridge, surrounded by water lilies and lily pads (drawing back to the original painting of Ophelia by Sir John Everett Millais). By placing Abdullah in such a serene environment I changed the death from something saddening and panicked, to something calming. As Abdullah travels through the water under the bridge, he is traveling into the afterlife, accepting his fate, and calmly floating into peace.

This was an acrylic painting on canvas, I used an impasto to create texture in the flowers and bubbles, and a gloss varnish over the water to make it look wet. by @galadrielart

'Book of Bloom'
I did art again :) this is supposed to represent the idea of only being able to grow so much in one environment. If you dont keep turning the pages then you will be stuck on the same chapter, without growing and evolving into someone better. by @galadrielart
