I picked up this Kennedy tool chest and stacking boxes recently for a steal. It took some elbow grease (and a lot of Simple Green) to clean it up, but beneath the grime the paint was in great condition. As you can see in the first photo, the front cover for the top box sticks out annoyingly far in its ‘stored’ position, so I made a little latch to secure it to the backside instead (see video).

Rolling solo. This is my setup to cut eleven-foot rabbets in some gorgeous ribbon stripe mahogany boards. A carefully positioned infeed roller and stout featherboard allow me to focus where it counts. These will become a mitered frame around a large dining table.

(Yes, I’m wearing gloves at the table saw—something I only do in this situation with large, heavy pieces where I feel it’s safer to have a good grip on the board and no cuts or splinters while pushing it through.)

Friends, I’m delighted to be showing many new works in 𝘚𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴, 𝘐𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 opening this Saturday, May 7 from 1-4 PM @hydeparkartcenter (link in bio).

My good buddy @jasper.goodrich has poured a tremendous amount of energy into curating work from an outstanding group of artists and we’d love to see you there. The exhibition runs through July 24.

I’ve employed a forest of clamps to glue the face frame to the carcass. Too many clamps? No such thing.

I’m using the bandsaw to make ‘L’ tenons which will strengthen some carcase miters.

Working with and learning to anticipate the behavior of materials is as much an exercise in ear training and haptic feedback as it is in manipulating tools. Here’s a good example. When judging the relative flatness of a solid wood panel, the muted “slap” and the way the panel floats momentarily on a cushion of air are good indicators that it’s within a reasonable tolerance. Of course, wood is constantly in (slow) motion and flat is only a temporary state—just long enough to join parts together into a self-supporting structure if I play my cards right.

Oh, and it helps to have a 16-inch Porter jointer!
