100 years of Georg Karl Pfahler 🎂🎉

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of #georgkarlpfahler one of the most distinctive figures of post-war German abstraction and an important pioneer of Hard-Edge painting. His work was shaped by a radical interest in the relationship between color, form, and space—reducing painting to precisely defined forms and powerful fields of color.

Created in 1965, these two exceptional paintings belong to an important moment in Pfahler’s artistic development. Their geometric compositions are dominated by an extraordinary, almost unmistakable orange—intense, luminous, and remarkable in its particular character. Set against deep blue, green, red, and violet, the orange seems to expand across the picture surface, creating a powerful tension between the individual color fields.

Created in 1965, the same year he participated in the legendary exhibition Signale in Basel, where Pfahler was presented alongside other artists including Ellsworth Kelly, Kenneth Noland and other important representatives of contemporary European abstraction. The exhibition reflected the growing international interest in a new language of painting based on color, form, and perception.

For Pfahler, color was never merely decorative. It became an active force within the composition, defining space and creating movement through the interaction of sharply delineated forms. The apparent simplicity of his paintings therefore conceals a highly considered exploration of perception, balance, and spatial relationships.

A glimpse of summer, seen through Picasso’s eyes. ☀️

In this rare aquatint, #pablopicasso captures the atmosphere of the South of France through an extraordinary interplay of color, light, and geometry. The intense red of the interior gives the composition a warm, almost palpable energy, while the light blue of the sky opens the space towards the calm of the landscape beyond.

Through the windows, bright green palm leaves appear against the sky, their shapes echoed in the rhythmic patterns of the floor. Interior and exterior seem to merge, creating a composition that is at once vibrant and remarkably serene.

The expressive lines and brush-like marks are characteristic of Picasso’s innovative approach to color and form. Every element is carefully balanced, yet the composition retains a sense of spontaneity and freedom—the feeling of a quiet summer afternoon in the South of France.

This particular impression is exceptionally rare and remarkable for its condition. Freshly framed for the first time, the sheet had never been exposed to sunlight before, allowing Picasso’s original colors to be preserved with extraordinary freshness and intensity.

#happybirthday🎂 to #lyonelfeininger — celebrating an artist who turned line, light, and movement into a visual language. ✨

On the 155th anniversary of Lyonel Feininger’s birth, we celebrate one of the great innovators of twentieth-century art. While his paintings have become iconic, the woodcut occupied an equally important place within his artistic practice. For Feininger, it was not merely a printmaking technique, but a medium through which he could distill the world into its essential elements—light, rhythm, and structure. The bold contrast of black and white, the precision of each carved line, and the reduction to geometric forms became defining characteristics of his unmistakable visual language.

Like the restless sea, Feininger’s compositions are charged with movement. Ships, waves, coastlines, and distant horizons are transformed into crystalline arrangements of intersecting planes and dynamic diagonals. Rather than depicting nature as it appears, he translated it into an architecture of light, where every line contributes to a carefully balanced composition. His works convey both stillness and motion, combining the power of natural forces with an extraordinary sense of order and harmony.

The woodcut presented here is an exceptional rarity. Only two impressions are known to exist, making it one of the rarest prints in Feininger’s graphic oeuvre. This impression also carries a distinguished provenance, having once belonged to Julia Feininger, the artist’s wife.

A remarkable testament to Feininger’s mastery of the woodcut—one of the mediums through which he developed a visual language that continues to shape the history of modern art.

One year ago today, we remember Günther Uecker, one of the most influential artists of the post-war era.

Günther Uecker was a central figure of the ZERO movement and one of the most innovative artists of his generation. By replacing the painter’s brushstroke with the nail, he transformed the language of art and created works that explored light, movement, rhythm, and perception in entirely new ways.

Black Swan occupies a singular position within his oeuvre. It is the only known nail object by Uecker that is both entirely black and perfectly circular—an exceptional work that combines painting, sculpture, movement, and light in a way found nowhere else in his artistic legacy.

Created during the most celebrated period of his career, the work exemplifies the radical vision that emerged from the ZERO movement. Here, black nails of varying lengths form not a surface, but an almost organic presence. Rather than suggesting movement across the picture plane, they create a rhythmic energy extending into depth, giving life to the fragile yet powerful figure of the swan.

The motif reflects two lifelong sources of inspiration for Uecker: nature and music theatre. Birds appeared repeatedly throughout his work, inspired by memories of the flocks he observed on the Baltic coast during his childhood. In Black Swan, these natural forms merge with the dramatic world of opera—a field to which Uecker remained deeply connected through his stage designs, including productions at Bayreuth.

In 1979, Götz Friedrich staged Wagner’s Lohengrin for the Bayreuth Festival. Uecker created the stage design for the production, which received multiple awards and became one of the most acclaimed collaborations between the two artists. Following this project, Uecker gifted the Black Swan to Götz Friedrich, widely regarded as one of the most important opera and theatre directors of Germany.

Flowers. Flowers. Flowers. 🌸🌺🌼

As spring begins to bloom, flowers return with color, light, and new energy. In the works of #karlschmidtrottluff , this natural motif becomes something powerful and expressive.

Just as blossoms grow freely while still following their own structure, his paintings balance spontaneity and form. Strong, contrasting colors give the flowers intensity, making them feel vibrant and full of life.

Like a garden between fresh growth and artistic control, two of his works show how a simple motif can become bold, dynamic, and alive.

#WomenOfBerlin 🌸🌺🌷

On this #InternationalWomensDay we remember the women of Berlin in the 1920s — the women #HeinrichZille captured in his drawings from the courtyards and narrow streets of the city’s working-class neighborhoods. Life in the crowded tenement houses was often harsh. Money was scarce, work was exhausting, and families lived closely together in small apartments. Women carried much of the responsibility: raising children, running households, earning what they could, and holding their families together in a city still marked by the aftermath of war and economic hardship.

Zille’s drawings reveal not glamour, but reality — and the remarkable strength within it. These women formed the backbone of everyday life in Berlin. They shared burdens, supported neighbors, and created resilience and solidarity in difficult times. Today, we remember their lives and honor the countless women whose strength, courage, and perseverance have shaped history, often quietly but profoundly.

All works by Heinrich Zille:

📌 Dienstmädchen mit Fuchs (Schal), Farbige Kreidezeichnung um 1920, 22,9 x 15,5 cm, mit dem offiziellem Nachlaßstempel

#loveintheair 💕💖✨

We hope you step into the day feeling as weightless and enchanted as these two timeless lovers suspended in a dream of color.

In 1964, #marcchagall created this poetic lithograph as part of the imagery connected to his celebrated ceiling for the Palais Garnier in Paris. The composition echoes the soaring movement and theatrical brilliance of the monumental painting above the auditorium, where Chagall brought legendary love stories and operatic masterpieces to life in a radiant symphony of color.

Floating figures, glowing blues and passionate reds merge in a composition that feels both intimate and infinite. With his unmistakable poetic symbolism and delicate, fluid line work, Chagall invites us into a world where love defies gravity and reality dissolves into dream.

✨ A first glimpse of what’s to come ✨

With Art Karlsruhe and Art & Antique Fair Luxembourg just around the corner, the works shown above offer a preview of the highlights we’re excited to present at both fairs.

The two works shown here are the lithographs Sirène et Poisson and Sirène au Pin from the portfolio Nice et la Côte d’Azur by #marcchagall . Created in vibrant colors and poetic imagery, these prints capture Chagall’s dreamlike vision of the Mediterranean, where myth, nature, and memory merge into a lyrical world.
