ā€œSometimes I feel like I may be gaslighting my needs for peace in the relationship, while other times I wonder if I am asking too much from one person.ā€
~ A woman left a comment on one of my posts

I appreciate the inner conflict it exposes.

I may need freedom, but I also need stability.
I need self-expression, but I also need belonging.
I need something more, while the familiar still feels safer than the unknown.

Self-responsibility doesn’t mean always choosing the need that looks more evolved, empowered or ā€œhealed.ā€

It means becoming conscious of what I am choosing - and why - without judging myself for the choice.

And trusting that as I build capacity, I’ll be able to choose the unknown when I’m ready.

This is the kind of discernment we practice in True to Me, Open to You : learning to know yourself deeply enough to make choices from self-trust, rather than fear or someone else’s idea of what you should do.

We begin in November. Enrollment is open now. Details at the link in bio. by @galinasinger

I finally gathered some of the core ideas into a free book:

There are moments when I can’t stand my husband.
Yes, I said it.
That’s human.

Long-term love doesn’t mean you’ll never feel anger, disappointment or resentment.
It means you stop being afraid of those feelings.

For years, I thought anger was a threat to love.
So I controlled it.
Suppressed it.
Bottled it up.
Until it would explode and damage my relationship.

Now I see it differently.
Anger is information.
It tells me what in me needs attention.

If I listen to it instead of acting from it, I eventually discover what’s underneath.

Usually it’s something much more vulnerable:
A hurt.
A fear.
A longing.
A need.

Beneath anger, there is often love trying to protect something that matters.

That’s why I don’t believe anger is the opposite of love.

Unconscious anger damages relationships.
Conscious anger can deepen them. by @galinasinger

Staying became a choice only when I knew I was capable of leaving.

Freedom wasn’t in staying or leaving. It was in knowing I could choose. by @galinasinger

Resentment can tell us as much about our own capacity as it is about the people we’re resenting.

I’ll be exploring this live this Wednesday, September 30, in my free masterclass, How to Stop Resenting the People You Love. Link in bio & stories. by @galinasinger

Self-responsibility does not mean self-sufficiency.

We need each other.

The work is learning how to need each other without making another person responsible for our wellbeing.

Needs we never ask for don’t disappear. They turn into resentment.

I’m teaching a free live masterclass on exactly this, this Wednesday, September 30: How to Stop Resenting the People You Love.

For me learning to love wasn’t about learning how to make a relationship work.

Much of it has been about unlearning what I believed love was.

I’m still learning.

Maybe that’s what 38 years of loving another human has been for.

True to Me, Open to You - my 3-month relating program - grew out of this journey.

Enrollment is open.
Early Bird pricing through September 27.

Learning to know what I need changed the way I relate.

Because other people’s capacity to meet my needs no longer determines whether I abandon myself.

This is the work at the heart of True to Me, Open to You: learning to stay connected to others without abandoning yourself.

Enrollment is now open. Early Bird pricing through September 27.
