Make sure to stop by Idea Lab to see Adriana Corral's work as part of our

Idea Lab is open Tuesday - Friday 12 - 5 pm and Saturday by appointment.

Interdisciplinary artist Adriana Corral (b. 1983) critically examines history and legacy along the U.S. Mexico border in El Paso, Texas. Human experiences of immigration, citizenship, femicide, labor, and policy ground Corralโ€™s work as she explores the terrains of loss, memory, and human rights in this region. Integrating archival practices into her art making, Corral mediates between state and national archives and oral histories by various communities and their members. For Corral, primary documents and verbal repertoires manifest into sculptures, site-specific installations, performances, and drawings. Additionally, the artist considers how the physical and cultural landscape informs collective memory and the destruction of this memory. Corral often uses ash, soil, and other natural materials to abstract her work, as a reminder that the earth bears witness to a past that remains present.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Betelhem Makonnen, a brilliant artist and our long-time friend.

Makonnenโ€™s artistic, intellectual, and personal contributions profoundly impacted our communities across Austin, The University of Texas, and far beyond. Recently featured at AGBS in the 2025 exhibition โ€œ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅโ€-๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ: ๐˜‰๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ, her work in our permanent collection explores time as an inhabitable and relational experience felt from withinโ€”a practice of attention, alive with choice and possibility.

We miss her dearly, even as we remain inspired by her journey.

Joseฬ Villalobos is included in Made in Texas, a group exhibition curated by Phillip A. Townsend, Ph.D., at the Art Galleries at Black Studies at The University of Texas at Austin.

Bringing together 17 works by Texas-born artists, Made in Texas considers the state as a complex cultural force shaped by history, politics, migration, labor, industry, and memory. Rather than presenting Texas through a single narrative, the exhibition explores how identity, place, and belonging are continually formed and contested.

Joseฬโ€™s work will be presented alongside artists including Jaโ€™Tovia Gary, Robert Hodge, Deborah Roberts, Robert Pruitt, Charisse Pearlina Weston, and more.

Opening Reception

We are excited to announce our Fall 2026 exhibition! ๐™ˆ๐™–๐™™๐™š ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™๐™š๐™ญ๐™–๐™จ, an original exhibition at both the Christian-Green Gallery and Idea Lab, will be on view from September 4 - December 5, 2026.

You are invited to attend the opening reception on Thursday, September 3, from 5:30โ€“7:30 p.m. at the Christian-Green Gallery (Jester A232).
This event is free and open to the public.
RSVP at link in bio.

๐™ˆ๐™–๐™™๐™š ๐™ž๐™ฃ ๐™๐™š๐™ญ๐™–๐™จ invites audiences to encounter the state as a complex cultural force whose political and social conditions quietly shape and sometimes limit the possibilities of liberty, care, and collective belonging. This multi-venue exhibition situates Texas within local and global conversations about regionalism, climate urgency, labor economies, and the politics of visibility. Artists such as Jaโ€™Tovia Gary, Robert Hodge, Deborah Roberts, Joseฬ Villalobos, and Charisse Pearlina Weston bring distinct practices that engage questions of representation, history, and place, expanding how Texas can be seen and understood through contemporary art.

ABOUT ๐˜›๐˜™๐˜ˆ๐˜•๐˜š๐˜Š๐˜Œ๐˜•๐˜‹๐˜Œ๐˜•๐˜Š๐˜Œ

โ€œMore than an exhibition, ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ was a declarationโ€”a celebration of the radical elation and complexity of Black queer life. It foregrounded ecstasy not as an aberration, nor as mere excess, but as a vital, life-affirming force founded in intimacy, creativity, and spirituality.โ€ โ€”Phillip A. Townsend

Starting as an exhibition in January 2025, ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ widened its research impact with a symposium where artists, scholars, and curators convened at The University of Texas at Austin to explore the ideas presented in the exhibition and share insights from their respective scholarly and creative practices.

After this in-person exchange and deeper research, the participants wrote catalog essays on the exhibitionโ€™s themes: Portraiture, Beyond Figuration, Dance and Movement, Spirituality, Sex and Sensuality, Black Queer Futures, and Altered States.
