"The Other Memory"
Isak Anshelm, Linn Lindström & Mats Danielsson
10.10 - 01.11 2026

In the exhibition The Other Memory, artists Isak Anshelm, Linn Lindström and Mats Danielsson take as their starting point a set of sentences written to warn future generations, for example about sites where nuclear waste is stored. The sentences are intended to capture the feeling that is then to be conveyed through media other than language. Research in the field also discusses physical solutions. One proposal is to cast a gigantic concrete block over the site, so that nothing can grow there and the landscape becomes so unsettling that people do not want to stay. Another is to create a religion around the danger the site holds. Most of the proposals appeal to the emotions of future people rather than to their reason.

Looking at our own time and at written history, human arrogance seems to be central. We constantly place ourselves at the centre and regard animals, nature and other cultures, both contemporary and extinct, with a sense of superiority. What early cultures wished to convey and preserve, we have both rejected and dug up. But what happens if we instead listen to a different kind of memory? The exhibition asks whether there is a genetic or inherited memory in our consciousness, or in the subconscious, that causes us as a species to react with the same gut feeling, to feel the same unease, fear and joy in response to the same things. A shared memory across time, one that is not learned. taken in Galleri Thomassen by @gallerithomassen

Emma Åvall
"The Unruly"
10.10 - 01.11 2026

The works in this exhibition are attempting to live their own lives. Patterns are breaking free and running away from their role as decoration on a dress and buttons multiply to spread like a virus. A shirt collar stretches itself out to absurdity and morphs itself into a weapon while a painting of a jacket wishes it was a birthday cake. A painting cuts itself in half and, like the myth of the earthworm, several emerge where there was once only one. The paintings refuse to be restrained. They are unruly, feral, rowdy. The paintings rebel against the surface and question themselves.

Emma Åvall (b.1990 in Gothenburg, Sweden) earned her MFA from HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design in Gothenburg in 2021. Previous solo exhibitions include Domeij Gallery, Stockholm (2022); Sotheby's, Stockholm (2022); POM Gallery, Mariefred (2021, 2026); and Galleri Thomassen, Gothenburg (2020, 2023). Her work is represented in various public and private collections in Sweden, Norway, and the USA.

"Sunset Safari", 2026
Watercolor on paper, 110 × 82 cm

Part of Erik Kihlbaum's ongoing exhibition "There's a Riot Next Door"
__

In There’s a riot next door, images of leisure, wealth and privilege unfold like fragments from a private archive.

Ski resorts, swimming pools and holidays evoke a world seemingly insulated from whatever lies beyond its borders. Drawn from photographs of the past, the images nevertheless speak insistently to the present.
They inhabit the uneasy space between nostalgia and denial, beauty and detachment. A portrait of privilege not through excess itself, but through the luxury of looking away.

Hein Spellmann (b. 1962 in Bassum, Germany) is a Berlin-based artist whose practice combines photography and object art. His work focuses on urban spaces and architectural façades, transforming photographic fragments into three-dimensional objects.

Building Skin, Spellmann’s fifth solo exhibition at Gallery Thomassen, explores the architecture of Tokyo, Gothenburg, and The Hague. Single three-dimensional façade objects featuring photographic details of buildings are arranged in varying forms, colours, and lighting to create an urban composition within the gallery space.

Since 1996, Spellmann has exhibited regularly in exhibitions in Germany and internationally. His works are held in numerous private and public collections, including the National Museum Szczecin, Museum Ephraim-Palais, Berlin City Museum, and the National Public Art Council, Sweden. taken in Galleri Thomassen by @gallerithomassen
