Join us for a conversation during the ongoing show titled Kya nadi ke paar sukoon hai?, a solo exhibition by Bikash Chandra Senapati. We are bringing together Jagan Shah (Architect and Urbanist), Martand Khosla (Artist and Architect), Misha Bains (Fair Director and Curator of India Design ID) and Arjun Bahl (Co-Founder of St+art India Foundation and Gallery XXL) for a conversation titled โ€˜The City as Archive: Ecologies of Memory, Making and the Built World.โ€™

The discussion reflects on how cities hold memory in their buildings, green spaces, disappearing ecologies, and the marks left by those who have moved through them. Spanning architecture, urban planning, design and curation, the conversation asks: how do our cities archive the living world? And as landscapes transform, what is the responsibility of those who build, make, collect and bear witness?

Time : 5.30pm onwards
Date : Thursday, October 15
Location : Gallery XXL

What does a line mean to you?

In Bikash Chandra Senapatiโ€™s (@bikashchandra_senapati) practice, a line is rarely just a line: it becomes a branch, a path, the edge of a street. It carries the quiet rhythm of the village he grew up in and the structure of the cities he later came to know, holding both in constant conversation.

On view soon at his solo exhibition
Opening on 11.09.26
at Gallery XXL, New Delhi.

Introducing Bikash Chandra Senapati (@bikashchandra_senapati)

Bikash Chandra Senapati is an artist from Odisha, now based in Vadodara. He completed his BFA at Chitra Kala Parisath, Bengaluru, and his MFA in Graphics at Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh. His early years in Bengaluru marked a difficult transition โ€” new language, new distance, the unfamiliar rhythm of city life.

After his undergraduate studies, Bikash spent four years travelling across different Indian cities, immersing himself in varied social and cultural contexts. It was a formative period that sharpened his sensitivity to lived experience and everyday narrative, and drew him toward materiality and process โ€” eventually toward printmaking, which he pursued further during his postgraduate years in Khairagarh.

Drawing lines remains his primary language: a meditative, grounding process. โ€œMy lines emerge intuitively,โ€ he says, โ€œsometimes quiet and organic, echoing the fluidity of rural terrain; sometimes structured and geometric, responding to the order and pressure of urban spaces.โ€ Through them, he opens up conversations between past and present, nature and city, movement and stillness โ€” memories of rural Odisha in constant dialogue with the urban worlds he later moved through.

His work has been recognised with the 96th AIFACS Award in Drawing, the ABIR First Take Award, and the State Award in Printmaking from the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi, among others. His solo work has shown at SAMA, Udaipur, and Triveni Gallery, New Delhi.

One year ago, we opened our doors in New Delhi with sabr, ghar, suroor, Hanif Kureshiโ€™s first solo exhibition in India, on the occasion of his birth anniversary.ย

Since then, weโ€™ve hosted six exhibitions, countless conversations, art nights that ran late, and a Defence Colony neighbourhood that became home. Thank you to every artist who trusted us with their work, and to everyone who walked in, stayed a while, and kept coming back. The love youโ€™ve shown this space has meant everything.

Hereโ€™s to many more years of making art feel a little more accessible and many more conversations ๐Ÿค

Mixed media on paper
44 x 60 in

Made during his residency at Chandraangan, ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜œ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ draws its palette from the peacocks that moved through the residency grounds as Bikash would collect their fallen feathers and keep them close, letting their colour settle into his eye before it reached the paper. That same attention turned outward to the plateaus and hills of Rajasthan, where colour reveals itself not as a single tone but as variety within the land itself.

The work also carries what he witnessed: the colours found in textures during visits to marble mining sites, where the cut face of a hill laid open forms that were held inside the rock, unseen until the cutting revealed them.

๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜œ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ, then, is less a single palette than a gathering of them: feather, hill, procession, and stone, each contributing its own register of colour to the work.

On view now at Bikashโ€™s solo exhibition, ๐˜’๐˜บ๐˜ข ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ช ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ช?

Edition 4 of 5

Made during Bikashโ€™s college years, at a time when most students around him worked in black and white and colour was rarely explored. He began working with it slowly, and it soon became a defining part of his practice: as seen here, with greens and reds pressing through a dark ground, the vines and forms held close together on the page.

On view now at Bikashโ€™s solo exhibition, ๐˜’๐˜บ๐˜ข ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ช ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ช?

Pen and watercolour on paper
30 x 22 in each

Made during a residency at Space Studio, Baroda during which Bikash traveled to Mumbai and spent time among the cityโ€™s spiritual caves and came across a dry tree set against colourful surroundings. These two works are a visual expression of environmental degradation through the act of mark-making. The trees featured are not literal depictions but gestural forms born from repetitive and intuitive strokes. Each mark accumulates to reveal the presence of life once rooted in harmony with its surroundings, while the absence of a defined setting emphasizes the loss of identity in natural spaces affected by ecological imbalance. These works invite viewers to reflect on disappearing landscapes and the silent erosion of natureโ€™s essence.

On view now at Bikashโ€™s solo exhibition, ๐˜’๐˜บ๐˜ข ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ช ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ช?

We are delighted to announce a special collaboration with Gallery XXL and Ahmedabad-based urban artist DO @dostreetart for this edition of India Design ID Mumbai 2026.

In this reel, DO talks about his practice, our collaboration, and the work on the facade.

๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ & ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ?, 2026

In an era of rapid transit and fragmented attention, our bodies often arrive long before our minds do. โ€˜Here & Now?โ€™ย is both an architectural skin and a deliberate pause: a question set at the threshold.

The phrase is broken into geometric primitives, gradients and intersecting curves, so legibility is deliberately delayed. Soft, atmospheric gradient tubes meet flat blocks of slate, neon pink and green, mirroring the muted noise and sharp stimulation of urban life.

From afar, an abstract composition; up close, a hidden query comes into focus. Are you genuinely present, or simply occupying space?

DO (@dostreetart ) in front of his facade at India Design ID Mumbai 2026 (@indiadesignid), opening today.

Look at it from across the forecourt, then walk towards it. Somewhere between the slate, the neon and the gradients, a question is waiting: are you genuinely present, or simply occupying space?

Come find it in person.

A conversation with Bikash Chandra Senapati and Paribartana Mohanty

Join us at Gallery XXL for a conversation with artists Bikash Chandra Senapati and Paribartana Mohanty, in relation to Bikashโ€™s solo exhibition, ๐˜’๐˜บ๐˜ข ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ช ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ช?, as they dive deeper into their research of Kendrapara, Odisha where Bikash grew up.

Bikash Chandra Senapati completed a BFA in Painting from Chitra Kala Parisath, Bengaluru, and an MFA in Printmaking from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh. He works from memory rather than record, neither sketching nor photographing beforehand, and now lives and works in Vadodara.

Paribartana Mohanty is a multimedia artist, primarily working with video, performance lectures and painting. His recent work explores and speculates on the new environment-disaster-landscapes emerging near the coast of the Bay of Bengal in Odisha, and the impact of recurring cyclones, tsunamis and land erosion on marginal coastal communities.

A Straight Line, a body of black-and-white acrylics on canvas,ย marks a different register within Bikash Chandra Senapatiโ€™s practice. Created during his fatherโ€™s illness and the period after his death, this series indicates a stretch of time when Bikash was unable to create. Here white does not signify absence; it holds what has been suppressed, memory surfacing only where the black allows it to. He has spoken of finding clarity at night rather than in the passing distraction of day, and these works reach for that same depth โ€” not painted around the blackness, but built from inside it, so that what emerges does so slowly, and only in the dark.
