Borrowing from the internet mythology of the “backrooms” — a seemingly infinite, alternate dimension of empty, uncanny, and nostalgic spaces, glitching like a video game character out of bounds, out of standard reality — the work imagines a gallery populated by cardboard figures caught in permanent loops of self-documentation, or “selfies,” appearing in its contemporary iteration as the “fit pic,” a head-to-toe documentation of the body’s styling.

None of these identities is entirely fictional, yet none fully coincides with the artist. As in character selection in video games, each outfit temporarily reprogrammes the way we interpret them. The speed at which these identities replace one another reflects the logic of social media, but also that of the fashion system, within which garments increasingly circulate as images before we ever encounter them as objects, while one fashion collection is almost immediately displaced by the next. The cardboard figure becomes an ideal sculptural form for such a condition, continuing a historical lineage of surrogate bodies.

Distributed throughout the gallery, the figures are choreographed as a sculptural ensemble that evokes the arrangement of bodies in collections of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. In this sense, the installation becomes a kind of Madame Tussauds, where the bodies of celebrities, commercial figures, and fictional characters are reconstructed not to replace their original or “real” bodies, but to satisfy the public desire to encounter them, photograph them, and further circulate their images.

As each body is occupied with producing its own image, its gaze directed towards the phone it holds, the only socially available subject within the installation becomes the visitor. To enter the gallery is to become the only person capable of making eye contact, recognising another’s presen taken in Galerija Novo by @gallerynovo

some selfies & references for the performance OPENING (series Self-titled, 2022-, 2026) last friday at @gallerynovo 🤳🤳🤳 OPENING is the beginning of a new ongoing performance series all connected to the mask, the surrogate body and the selfie, about the emphasised idea that if you’re showing more face you’re somehow being more real (especially amidst the AI slop we live amongst), slowly building this weird logistical fiction of an artist who is maybe everywhere and nowhere at the same time, at many many openings, inside many bodies, doubling, multiplying, teleporting🌀🗺️ anyway,,, more openings to go to xx

🤳 Not doable without my lovely performers, my army of Karlos: Dario Jakasović (@dariojakasovic), Sunčica Pulja (@suncica_pulja_), Aleksa Staničić & Anonymous ❤️❤️❤️

On Friday, we opened the exhibition BODY. NORM. RESISTANCE. by artists @lochnesi and @karlostefanek, curated by Sabina Oroshi. As part of the exhibition, the artists presented performances that extended the exploration of the body and its social roles into the realm of performance and direct engagement with the audience.

The exhibition examines the ways in which social norms shape, interpret, and direct the body. Through various media, the artists reflect on gender, identity, belonging, desirability, and social expectations, as well as the possibilities for challenging and resisting them.

Thank you to everyone who came to support the opening!

The exhibition was produced by the associations Proces and Metamedia.

U petak, 18. rujna, u @gallerynovo otvorili smo izložbu TIJELO. NORMA. OTPOR. Ines Borovac i Karla Štefaneka, u kustoskoj koncepciji Sabine Oroshi.

NORMA. OTPOR. ostaje otvorena do 23. listopada 2026.

📍 Galerija Novo, Pula
🕐 rujan: pon–sri 10–14h, čet–pet 18–21h
🕐 listopad: pon–sri 10–14h, čet–pet 17–20h

As part of the exhibition, Karlo Štefanek will deliver a performance that expands this investigation of the body and its social roles into live performance and direct engagement with the audience.

The exhibition is curated by @sabsgram and organized by the @proces.queer and @udruga.metamedij associations.

Last Thursday, we opened the exhibition Fubar ARCHIVE by the art organization Format C with a presentation of the archive of international glitch art. The presenters were Dina Gligo and Vedran Gligo from Format C, and the moderator was curator Irena Borić.

With the exhibition, we present the first variable exhibition installation based on the Fubar archive, which programmatically and pseudo-randomly displays more than 1,500 visual artworks from Fubar's interactive database and multimedia database - digital images and videos that use error as an inspiration, motif, or method. Glitch art is an interdisciplinary way of looking at the world that allows a deeper examination of contemporary phenomena such as international networks, electronic circuits, digital compression, and the ways in which we shape them. An error within an artwork can reveal the internal structure of a digital file, its ecosystem and ethics, and its forms of distribution. Our engagement brings forward the final component of glitch art: an understanding of today’s multimedia landscape as a commons vulnerable to censorship, manipulation, and instrumentalization.

The exhibition was organized by the Atanor association, the Format C art organization, and the Novo gallery.

𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁 𝗖: 𝗙𝘂𝗯𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗩𝗘

3. 9. 2026., 20:00 h

presentation & exhibition

Since its founding in 2015 throughout all ten editions (most recently in 2024), the Fubar (/ˈfuːbar/) festival has brought together hundreds of productions and more than a thousand artists and authors working in the field of glitch art. In 2025, Fubar evolved into a hybrid community platform, in 2026 it continues as the first biennial dedicated to variable glitch art. Throughout this process, inspired by the numerous contributions and sustained support of glitch art practitioners, Fubar has formed an interactive data and multimedia archive containing more than 1,500 artworks, offering an opportunity to explore an entire decade of experimental digital art from around the world. This open archive also enables the creation of curatorial collections for research and/or exhibition purposes, while opening up possibilities for the sustainable preservation of digital art through open protocols and free software.

At gallery Novo, we present the first variable exhibition installation based on the Fubar Archive, which programmatically and pseudo-randomly displays visual artworks from the Fubar Archive – digital images and videos that use error as an inspiration, motif, or method.

The opening will be preceded by a presentation of the open Fubar Archive web platform at 8 PM, moderated by curator Irena Borić.
On Saturday and Sunday, 5 and 6 September, free curatorial guided tours can be booked via novogallery.info@gmail.com by @gallerynovo

Thomas Ankersmit: The Tcherepnin Series (Music for the Original Serge Synthesizers)

27 8 2026

Opening performance for this year's Audioart Festival at Gallery Novo 📍

Over the past twenty years, Thomas Ankersmit ( @thomasankersmit ) has specialised in the Serge Modular analogue synthesiser. Through this instrument he channels inspiration from musique concrète, electroacoustic improvisation and psychoacoustic sound art.

In this new project, Ankersmit returns to the source: creating music for the large, original Serge systems located in historic studios around the world. This year, he has worked at Harvard University, Columbia University, CalArts in Los Angeles, the EMS studio in Stockholm, GRM in Paris, and Willem Twee in Den Bosch. The result of this work will be presented at selected concerts and on the forthcoming album.

The Audioart ( @audioartfestival ) festival brings together artists working in the fields of experimental and improvised music, audiovisual installations and performances, sound art and field recording.

We thank Thomas Ankersmit for bringing his work into our gallery space and everyone else who joined us on the opening night!

Coreography of Violence is conceived as an extended dialogue with Jelena Jureša’s solo exhibition, held at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, and this edition includes works by Jean-Luc Godard and Nebojša Slijepčević. It explores the complex relationships between collective memory and political responsibility.

The exhibition is curated by Branka Benčić and organized by the @mmsurijeka , @_apoteka_ , @udruga.metamedij , and @pulafilmfest , in partnership with KASK - School of Arts Ghent.
