✨ A Special Exhibition Opening at Solas Art Gallery ~ Friday 16th October ✨

Solas Art Gallery, Ballinamore, is delighted to invite you to the opening night of our exciting joint exhibition featuring two talented artists, Sharon Dollar and Michael J Lane

“Hang on a Moment” & “25 Years” — A Joint Exhibition at Solas Art Gallery

Sharon Dollar’s “Hang on a Moment” brings together vibrant watercolours of birds with ceramic and glass sculpture. With over 35 years of experience fusing and slumping glass, Sharon’s work is inspired by the beauty of Leitrim’s flora and fauna and her ongoing exploration of colour, nature and three-dimensional form.

Michael J Lane’s “25 Years” reflects on the environment and human experience along the River Shannon, its lakes and surrounding landscape. Drawing on his formative years spent fishing and boating on Lough Ree, Michael explores humanity’s enduring relationship with nature, including the lives of fishermen and farmers, time-worn structures and the changing Irish landscape.

The exhibition will officially open at 7:30pm on Friday, 16th October at Solas Art Gallery with Lindsay La Blanc as guest speaker. Lindsay is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, curator and researcher based in County Leitrim.

Have you been to see it yet?
“Cultural Similitudes” a Solo Exhibition by Laura Jean Zito at Solas Art Gallery is currently running until 9 October 2026

The exhibition brings together photographs from Zito’s extensive archives of Ireland and the Sinai Desert in Egypt, creating visual pairings that explore the connections between two communities shaped by tradition, resilience and rapid social change.
Featuring black and white silver gelatin photographs alongside colour C-prints and archival pigment ink photographs, the exhibition captures intimate moments, landscapes, people and disappearing ways of life.

Zito’s Irish photographs document decisive moments and glimpses of a changing rural and social landscape, while her Sinai work offers an intimate perspective on Bedouin life, from portraits of elders and young entrepreneurs to everyday scenes and stark desert landscapes.

At the centre of the exhibition is a consideration of the similarities between Irish and Bedouin experiences. Both communities have faced the transition from traditional lifestyles towards modernity, confronting changes in work, land ownership, family life, gender roles and expectations.

Through her work, Zito hopes to move beyond cultural stereotypes and reveal universal experiences like making a living, raising a family, pursuing passions and finding happiness.

“Cultural Similitudes” invites audiences to look beyond geographical and cultural differences and recognise the shared human experiences that connect us all.

🖼️All welcome 🍁

For an artist, being invited to take part in an exhibition — whether solo or as part of a group — is always something special.

There is the excitement of seeing the work leave the studio. The anticipation of seeing it hung in a gallery. And perhaps most importantly, there is the chance for the painting to be seen by people who may never otherwise have encountered it.

Of course, not every exhibition ends with every painting sold.

That is simply part of the life of an artist.

But I have never believed that this makes an exhibition unsuccessful.

A painting has had another life outside the studio. It has been looked at, considered, perhaps remembered. It has become part of an exhibition and part of its own history.

And I believe every painting eventually finds the place where it belongs — sometimes immediately, sometimes months or even years later — when it speaks to the right collector and finds its new home.

And when the exhibition ends?

The painting may return to the studio, move on to another gallery, or eventually find its way into a private collection. Whatever happens next, the exhibition remains part of its story.

I am very grateful to SOLAS ART GALLERY, BALLINAMORE, for inviting me to take part in their SUMMER EXHIBITION 2026, and for giving my work the opportunity to be seen.

That opportunity matters enormously.

Because before a painting can find a collector’s heart, it first has to find their eyes.

We are delighted to invite you to the Opening Night of Cultural Similitudes, a compelling solo exhibition by acclaimed photographer Laura Jean Zito, at Solas Art Gallery, Island Theatre, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim.

📅 Friday 11th September 2026
🕢 7.30 pm
📍 Solas Art Gallery, Ballinamore

The exhibition runs from 11th September until 9th October 2026.

Cultural Similitudes brings together photographs from Laura’s extensive archive of Ireland and the Sinai Desert, Egypt, exploring the striking connections between two cultures and communities shaped by tradition, austerity, resilience and profound social change.

Through pairings of black and white gelatin silver photographs, colour C-prints and archival pigment ink photographs, Laura creates visual conversations between Ireland and Sinai.

Her photographs capture what might be described as “decisive moments”, ways of working by hand, glimpses into private worlds and the character of communities across changing landscapes giving everyday occurrences a deeper symbolic significance.

Laura’s long-standing connection with Sinai enabled her to photograph aspects of Bedouin life rarely accessible to outsiders. Through her familiarity with local dialects and relationships within communities, she offers a unique perspective: one that moves beyond conflict and stereotype to reveal universal experiences of making a living, raising a family, pursuing dreams and finding happiness.

Cultural Similitudes invites us to look beyond cultural differences and discover common ground. Ultimately, it is a reflection on memory, resilience, tradition and change and a reminder that, wherever we come from, we are all seeking meaningful lives in a rapidly changing world.

The exhibition will be opened by Mariette Baptist-Fruin, who grew up in Egypt in the mid-seventies and worked in and with communities across the Middle East until 2018. Now living in County Leitrim, Mariette expresses herself through poetry, photography and presence.

Both will share keen observations about the photographs in an insightful dialogue exploring the ideas and connections within the exhibition.

All are welcome. Refreshments will be served. taken in Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim. by @gallerysolasart
