🚨 1.1 MILLION VOICES — IGNORED 🚨

More than 1.1 million Europeans voted for a shark fin trade ban.

And yet — the EU Commission is not answering.

This is not just a delay.

This is a failure of democracy.

We demand a clear timeline and proper follow-up on the EU Citizens Initiative STOP FINNING – STOP THE TRADE. For the sharks and healthy oceans 🦈🌊🇪🇺

Did you know deep-sea mining is putting incredible sharks like the charismatic megamouth shark at risk? 🦈 The megamouth shark is a very rare shark roaming the depths of the ocean - as deep as 4600 m (15,000 feet). It has only been observed in the wild a few times.

Worryingly, the threat extends beyond them, affecting the entire marine environment.

Expected direct and indirect consequences are dramatic and include:
- large-scale destruction of the seafloor
- habitat destruction
- massive and wide-ranging underwater noise and light pollution
- clouds of sediment causing potentially deadly issues for deep-sea filter and suspension feeders

⚠️ The Norwegian government has agreed to proceed with plans of exploration of deep seabed mining in the arctic near the famous island of Svalbard.😫
« The small glimmer of hope is that environmental knowledge must be compiled before extraction potentially occurs, and presented to the parliament along with the mining plans. This gives parliament the opportunity to say no to exploitation. » - Lønne Fjærtoft

We need to take action now – a moratorium or a complete ban is crucial to protect our precious ocean.

Curious about the captivating behaviour of orcas?🤯👇

A recent scientific study found that orcas are learning fascinating and sometimes terrifying new behaviours, showcasing their unparalleled intelligence and adaptability:

- 🐋 Unprecedented orca-on-blue-whale predation off the Australian coast.
- 🦈 Abducting baby pilot whales and tearing open sharks to feast on their livers.
- 🎣 In the southern Indian Ocean, two orca populations have increasingly scavenged off fishing longlines.
- ⛵️ Between 2020 and 2023, there were over 500 interactions involving orcas ramming and sinking boats near Spain and Portugal.

Researchers suggest that orcas are swift learners, passing down knowledge and tricks among their pods, and thus become « smarter » as a group.

But humans may also indirectly be driving orcas to become smarter, by changing ocean conditions. Human-caused climate change, for instance, may force orcas to rely more heavily on one another for learning. In Antarctica, as the ice melts, they are adapting their hunting techniques to catch seals.

« While orcas probably don’t know that humans are to blame for changes in their ocean habitat, they are acutely aware that humans are there. »

Sharks need a hero! 💪

💀100 MILLION SHARKS are killed each year.
From finning, longlines, bottom trawlers and gillnets.

The Ocean’s biodiversity crisis starts with saving sharks.

Be a hero for sharks:

💙 Avoid industrially caught seafood

🩵 Double check what’s on your plate- shark meat is often “disguised” with different market names

🤍 Share and follow organisations who are working hard to save sharks!

Some fish are just more extreme! 🌊

Warm-blooded, or mesothermic fish have adapted to keep parts of their bodies warmer than the surrounding water. ♨️

This helps them swim faster, migrate long-distance and enhances predatory performance.

It’s no surprise that mesothermic species include:

🦈 Great white sharks

🦈 Basking sharks

🦈 Mako sharks

🦈 Thresher sharks

🐟Tuna

A research team at @trinitycollegedublin and the @universityofpretoria analysed the way heat builds up in these “warm-bodied” predators.

As the Ocean continues to smash heat records, the larger, high fuel predators may be in trouble:

🔥 navigating warmer and warmer waters and finding less prey from overfishing.

Will these ancient predators survive today’s hot waters?

🔗➡️ Link in bio for our easy guidelines

📢 We have until 10th August to speak up for wildlife, habitats and entire ecosystems.

We’re in a habitat loss crisis.
Our disconnect with Nature grows every day.

But the European Commission has opened a public consultation on the Birds and Habitats Directives.
These laws provide the framework for the world’s largest network of protected areas, Natura 2000.

Is this really a good time to start amending environmental safeguards? 😤

The public consultation is a “stress test” to see if the laws should be simplified.
We believe simplifying these safeguards could weaken protection and put habitats and wildlife even more at risk - at a time when they are more vulnerable and fragile than ever.

So we’ve put together an easy, question-by-question response guide for to help citizens and organisations defend Nature protections. 💪💙

It takes about 15 minutes.

➡️ Share with your networks, tag NGOs and amplify this call.

➡️ Share your voice, take the time to respond to the European Commission.
You can respond as an EU citizen (you don’t need to be a policy expert) or as an NGO.

The beauty of our planet is endless 💙

➡️ Here's an amazing whale fact:
In addition to being the loudest animal on the planet, sperm whale communication is amongst the most complex in the animal kingdom! 💪🏽✨🧠

A study by @projectceti in Dominica recorded sperm whale “chatting” on the surface, with communications similar to human speech patterns, showing rising and falling tones. 🤯

For us, that’s further proof that animals have more layers of depth and intelligence we give them credit for. 💙

Whales may lead different lives, but like us, they have families, life events and collaborate towards a common goal.

These are the creatures we share a planet with. 🌍

These are the animals we’re still in time to protect. 🐋

What to-do if you spot an invasive species? 🤿 🐡

1. STAY SAFE. Don’t touch it (or any wildlife) or try to remove it, unless you’re in immediate danger. 🫷🚫

2. TELL SOMEONE. You can call or contact local authorities or NGO to report its presence in the area. 📞

3. BE A CITIZEN SCIENTIST. If you’re able to safely take a photograph, you can share it with local environmental groups or on the citizen-science platforms like the one below. 📸 🌊

🦆inaturalist @inaturalistorg

Climate change, human activity and unbalanced ecosystems means invasive species are becoming more common, and can do more damage, in places like the Mediterranean Sea. by @gallifreyfoundation

What's your experience of AI content?

As an organisation who loves to show the beauty of Nature, we feel it's important to authenticate content in the midst of the current AI tempest. ⚡

Why is AI generated wildlife detrimental to the real deal? ➡️

🐅 Fake videos of sharks, bears and other predators being "terrifying" are now rife on the internet.

🐯 Similarly, wild animals being made to look tame and “cuddly” around humans.

This kind of content can be damaging, shaping unreal expectations of the way animals interact with humans and behave in Nature. 🦝 🍃

All at a crucial time for wildlife.

❌ Right now, wild mammals are down to less than 4% of the world's total mammal biomass.

➡️ Livestock and humans make up the other 96%! 🐏 🚶

In the midst of this biodiversity crisis - what animals TRULY NEED is to be understood, supported and protected. 💓

✅ This means REAL photography.

✅ REAL footage of what their habitats and behaviours are like.

NOT: 🚫AI slop showing fake animals for views
(If we’re on the same internet, you’ve probably already seen how cr&p most of this content really is… 🤮 )

Besides doing a disservice to Nature, we feel it undermines the crucial, expensive, difficult and gritty work of:
 🔹 field scientists

 🔹 wildlife photographers

 🔹 conservation biologists

 🔹 humanity as a whole

(and don't get us started on data centres...)

What's been your experience of AI content?

Have we missed something?

These are real human thoughts 🧠

Your tuna sashimi shouldn’t come with a side of shark. 🤷‍♀️🦈

✅ Pole and line caught tuna is one of the most sustainable and targeted ways to fish for tuna.

So why has the UK placed high import tariffs on these fisheries?

We believe more balance is needed in fisheries regulations. ⚖️

For example: industrial tuna fishing practices like longlines and purse seines ☠️ ⛴️ are subsidised.
Yet the destructive techniques kill millions of sharks, rays, sea turtles, seabirds and dolphins as bycatch.
🦈🐢🐬🦅

Luckily, as consumers, we can make better choices.

Check for tuna labels that specify “pole and line” caught tuna. 🎣

Or better yet, if you live by the sea, opt for seasonal artisanal caught fish, supporting small-scale operations. 💙

Because we're not afraid to be "that guy" at the supermarket or restaurant, reading labels 🔎 and asking where the fish is from 🐟 😉

And neither should you.

What’s the word? Help us decide. 🤔

Is it greed? Is it ignorance?

🦐 Krill is not just food .
It’s the climate engine of the Southern Ocean, sequestering 23 million tonnes of CO₂ annually.

➡️ Sea ice, the nursery on which krill reproduction depends, is collapsing.

➡️ Norwegian supertrawling firm: Aker BioMarine's @mscecolabel certification is legally paused.

➡️ Penguin and seal species have just been declared Endangered by IUCN RedList.

‼️ The craziest part? Humans don’t NEED Antarctic Krill.
The Southern Ocean needs it now, more than ever.

But rather than pause all activity, Norway and Aker want to double their krill fishing quota. 😔

We say: leave ALL the krill where it belongs to feed whales, penguins and seals, as it should be.

Here’s how we can help:

✅ Refuse all products with krill or krill oil.

✅ Refuse farmed salmon (krill is being used on a massive scale just to make it look pink)

✅ Put pressure on retailers to drop krill products from their shelves (link in bio)🔗

Share this post to get the word out: krill belongs in the Ocean.

Help us find the words.. comment below ⬇️

STOP KRILLING NOW!

For consumers, krill is pet food, pink salmon, face cream. Non-essentials. 🧴🦐

For Aker QRILL and other companies, it’s money in the bank. 💰

For Antarctic wildlife, krill is LIFE. 🦭🐧🐋

We’re taking something ESSENTIAL to Antarctic wildlife to use as ingredients we have absolutely no need for!

Krill companies are claiming that “all is well”, saying their quota only allows for 1% of krill biomass to be caught.

BUT it’s being plundered directly in key Antarctic feeding grounds - alongside penguins, whales and seals already struggling to survive.

This kind of fishing is the VERY DEFINITION OF UNSUSTAINABLE. 🚫🙅🏾‍♀️

We don’t need to be in Antarctica to take REAL ACTION:

✅ Check your supplements (and pet food) for krill ingredients and switch TODAY

✅ Ask Boots UK & health retailers to sign the Antarctic Krill Pledge - link in bio

✅ Policymakers: the Antarctic Peninsula Marine Protected Area has been blocked for 8 years.

It’s time to start safeguarding.
