🐾❤️ 12 months. So many special faces. And one thing they all have in common…

At some point in their lives, they needed someone to save them. ❤️

🐾 DATE FOR THE DIARY! 🐾

It’s hard to believe we’re already approaching that time of year again, when we come together to celebrate and remember one of Galway SPCA’s most unforgettable characters… the one and only OLIVER! ❤️

Now, for those of you who followed Oliver’s adventures between 2014 and 2017, you’ll know exactly why we call him a LEGEND!

And for those who didn’t… well, let’s just say there are plenty of other words we could use to describe him, but most aren’t suitable for Facebook or Instagram! 🤣

Oliver certainly left his mark on us, and all these years later, we’re still keeping his memory alive in the best way we know how… bringing people and their dogs together for a wonderful day out, all while helping animals who need us.

🐾 SUNDAY, 25TH OCTOBER 2026 🐾

Join us for our annual 5K walk in memory of Oliver, and bring along your very own four-legged legends!

This will also be our last outdoor event of 2026, so we’d love to make it a good one!

And there’s more than just a walk to look forward to…

🐕 A mini dog show
🍔 A BBQ
🎟️ A raffle
❤️ Plenty of familiar faces, wagging tails and good company!

Registration is €10 per adult, with children under 16 FREE!

You can register on the day or in advance through PayPal.me/galwayspca.

One of our favourite parts of this event is seeing so many familiar faces return, especially our former Galway SPCA residents who are now living their very best lives with their forever families. 🥰

And of course, we absolutely love meeting new faces and making new furry friends too!

So gather your family, bring your dogs and come spend a lovely Sunday with us, making memories while raising vital funds for the animals in our care.

We can’t wait to see you all there! ❤️🐾

And Oliver… we’re fairly certain you’d still be causing absolute chaos if you were here! 🤣❤️ taken in Galway, Ireland by @galwayspca

GO MAGEE! 🐾❤️

Last week, we introduced you to one of our newest arrivals, and what a wonderful character he is! 🥰

Meet Magee, our handsome older Labrador gentleman who arrived into our care after being found straying.

At approximately 10 years old, Magee has a little arthritis, a few grey hairs and one rather big challenge to navigate… he is blind. ❤️

Just how much sight Magee has, if any, is something we are still trying to establish. This coming Tuesday, he has an appointment with Natasha, our eye specialist, who will hopefully be able to give us a clearer picture of his condition.

But in the meantime, Magee has absolutely no intention of letting his eyesight get in the way of enjoying life!

And goodness, is he enjoying himself! 🥹

Watching this lovely older boy out exploring our fields, taking in all the wonderful smells and embracing every little adventure is just a joy.

He’s affectionate, brave, full of fun and has the most wonderful enthusiasm for life.

Magee might not be able to see the world around him, but he’s certainly not missing out on experiencing it. ❤️

Once we’ve had his specialist appointment and know a little more about his needs, we’ll begin the search for a very special forever home where this gorgeous boy can enjoy everything his golden years should be filled with.

For now, we’re simply enjoying getting to know him and watching him make the most of every single day.

GO MAGEE! 🥰🐾

❤️ ANOTHER LITTLE ONE IN NEED ❤️

At the weekend , we received a call from a kind lady who had woken to find a little terrier curled up in her garden.

When she went outside to check on him, she quickly realised something wasn’t right. He appeared to have injured his back legs and was clearly in need of help.

We asked her to keep him safe while we worked out how to get him into our care.

Thankfully, one of our wonderful foster families offered to collect him immediately, while a member of our team, who was enjoying her day off, made a three-hour round trip to bring him to our sanctuary.

By 5pm, our little patient had arrived. ❤️

Despite it being a Sunday evening, our fantastic vets at A Country Practice Vet Clinic told us to bring him straight in.

It was obvious this little boy was in considerable pain, so we left him in the capable hands of vet Sara, who sedated him and carried out X-rays.

Sadly, the news wasn’t good.

Our little man, who we’ve named Hopster, has suffered a complicated pelvic fracture, most likely as a result of a road traffic accident. 💔

Thankfully, Hopster is now comfortable, receiving pain relief and remaining under veterinary observation.

His X-rays have been sent to an orthopaedic surgeon, and we are awaiting their assessment before deciding on the next steps in his treatment.

Despite everything, Hopster is such a sweet little soul. Understandably frightened and unsure, but now finally somewhere safe & warm!!

No collar.
No microchip.
Lots of fleas.
And so far, nobody has come forward looking for him.

We don’t know where Hopster came from or how he ended up injured and alone, but we do know that he will receive every bit of veterinary care he needs. ❤️

A huge thank you to the lovely lady who found him, to Michael and Roisin for answering our calls, and to our wonderful vets for being there when we needed them.

A reminder of what teamwork can achieve for animals in need.

Teamwork at its very best. 🥰

Please keep our little Hopster in your thoughts as we await further news. ❤️🐾 taken in Galway, Ireland by @galwayspca

255 Days ❤️

Back in December 2025, calls began coming in about a terrified white lurcher running along the busy roads of Galway City.

She covered miles, even appearing on dual carriageways and the motorway. How she survived, we’ll never know. Eventually, hunger led her into a garden, where she was caught.

Swilly arrived just before Christmas, frightened of everything. Our presence, our voices, even the gentlest touch terrified her.

We knew earning her trust would take time.

Thankfully, we discovered one thing that made Swilly forget her worries: other dogs. Watching her race around our fields gave us glimpses of the dog she could become.

Months slowly passed by! Swilly progressed, but she needed a very special home.❤️

Then an application arrived from Marie, who had enquired about Nya, our three-legged lurcher.

Our kennel manager read it and immediately thought of Swilly.

Marie had the patience Swilly needed, and a three-legged lurcher of her own, Jenny.

After many chats, the day came to meet. Swilly’s favourite person, Emma Clarke, was there for reassurance. We knew Swilly might barely acknowledge Marie.

But Marie fell for her instantly, and Swilly fell just as quickly for Jenny. Jenny, naturally, took it all in her stride!🫶🏻

Saying goodbye was emotional. We were delighted for Swilly, but those frightened eyes looking back at us made leaving her that little bit harder.🥹

That was over a month ago.

Today, Swilly is called Gladys, and the updates from Marie have been everything we hoped for and more.

With patience, love and gentle encouragement, Gladys has blossomed beyond anything we dared imagine. Not overnight, but little by little, at her own pace.

The photographs of her enjoying life at home brought tears to our eyes. Once, she couldn’t bear a human near her.

Now she knows what it means to feel safe, loved and truly at home.

This is why we never give up on the frightened ones. Behind that fear is a dog waiting for someone to believe in them.

Marie, thank you for seeing the girl we saw beneath all that fear, and for giving her the life she deserves.

Here’s to many happy adventures for Marie, Jenny, Gladys and their furry family. ❤️ taken in Galway, Ireland by @galwayspca

On Sunday, we received a call about a frightened kitten in Cregmore. He had spent the night alone, crying for help, but every attempt to reach him sent him deeper into the hedges.

While waiting for us, one very special little girl sat outside for TWO HOURS, patiently keeping watch over him. Her kindness and patience meant so much ❤️

That afternoon, our cattery manager arrived with a trap. A pouch of food tempted the hungry kitten into the trap.

We named him Gremlin.

Back at the cattery, his frightened cries were answered by another tiny voice… Phantom.

Phantom had been found alone in Ballinasloe days earlier. Kind young men cared for him until our volunteers collected him, but he wasn’t thriving.

As Gremlin settled into his enclosure, the two boys kept calling to one another. And calling. And calling! Other cats joined in!🥹

Neither kitten could settle alone.💔

Normally, kittens with unknown health histories must be quarantined separately. This protects against disease and parasites.

But emotional welfare matters too.

After weighing the risks and their distress, we decided to introduce them. It isn’t routine, and both remain closely monitored.

The change was almost instant.

The crying stopped. They curled up as though they’d known each other forever. At last, peace returned to the cattery ❤️

When Gremlin later went to the vet to have an injury to his mouth examined, Phantom paced and cried until his new friend returned. Their reunion was beautiful.

Two kittens who had faced the world alone had found comfort in each other.

Thank you to the family, that patient little girl, the young men who helped Phantom and our volunteers.

Rescue isn’t only about bringing animals out of danger. It’s about helping them feel safe once they’re there.

Gremlin and Phantom are still too young to complete their veterinary work, so adoption is a few weeks away.

For now, they have each other, and that has made all the difference.

And to our little guardian angel in Cregmore: thank you for showing us that kindness has no age limit.

Welcome to safety, Gremlin. And Phantom, thank you for being the friend he needed ❤️ taken in Galway, Ireland by @galwayspca

Queens. Hold the press. It's finally happened. PAT... IS A COVERGIRL. @galwayspca have released their 2027 calendar and the King of the Claddagh is Mr July. We're doing our best to keep him grounded amid the furore but needless to say his notions are off the charts. He hopes that you'll consider supporting gspca who saved his life and changed ours forever when we met each other last November. The link for the calendar is in my bio and stories. Please support them as they are amazing in everything that they do. taken in Claddagh, Galway, Ireland by @galwayspca

WELCOME, MAGEE! ❤️🐾

Earlier this week, Offaly Pound contacted us about an older Labrador boy who had been found straying.

His mandatory time in the pound was up, and he was finding the environment very stressful. It soon became clear that age wasn’t his only challenge. This lovely boy also appeared to be blind.

Of course, we said yes. ❤️

And so Magee, as we’ve named him, arrived into our care. What an absolute sweetheart he is!

A visit to our vets the following day confirmed his blindness. We’ve also requested a referral to eye specialist Natasha so we can understand his condition fully and give any future adopter the information they need.

But one thing is already very clear…

Magee isn’t letting his loss of sight stop him enjoying life! 🥰

He’s happily exploring our fields off lead and has already mastered the little hatch connecting his indoor kennel to his outdoor run.

Today we took him to our local marina to see how he’d cope somewhere unfamiliar, with light traffic and people coming and going.

And he took it all in his stride!

He spent a lovely half hour sniffing and investigating all the new smells, paying little attention to the passing cars. He did, however, seem very aware that the coffee shop had cakes! 🤣

At approximately 10 years old, Magee is a gentle, affectionate boy who asks for very little.

A secure garden, daily walks, a cosy place to rest and someone home for most of the day would make him very happy.

He can be unsure around other dogs and may growl if they come too close. Given his blindness, that’s understandable. He prefers to avoid confrontation, so we’re looking for a home where he’ll be the only dog.

Magee walks quietly on the lead and has the most beautiful, easygoing nature.

He may not be able to see the world around him, but he’s certainly still enjoying discovering it. ❤️

Now we’d love to find him a family who’ll give him the security, patience and love he deserves in his older years.

If you think you could offer Magee his forever home, please complete an adoption application through our website: gspca.ie

Welcome, Magee. We’re so glad you’re here. ❤️🐾 And we can’t wait to see what comes next ❤️🐾 taken in Galway, Ireland by @galwayspca

A SWEET LITTLE THANK YOU! 🧁❤️

On Monday, we had the pleasure of visiting the University of Galway, where the wonderful students of the Catholic Society had very kindly organised a bake sale in aid of Galway SPCA, as part of their celebrations honouring the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. 🐾

Our lovely Anita and Emma C went along to represent the two-legged members of our team (funny how neither needed much convincing when they heard there would be cake involved! 🤣).

And representing our four-legged residents was the beautiful Shambala, our gorgeous Greyhound cross, who did us all proud and was more than happy to soak up a little extra attention on the day. 🥰

As a charity that relies so heavily on the generosity and kindness of others, it really does mean so much when a group, organisation or community chooses to support the animals in our care.

Every fundraiser, big or small, plays a part in allowing us to continue doing what we do every single day…

🐾 Rescue
🐾 Rehabilitate
🐾 Rehome

And behind every one of those words are animals whose lives are made better because people care enough to help.

A very special thank you to Codie for organising the event, to his fellow Catholic Society students for all their hard work, and to everyone who stopped by to say hello, show their support and, of course, enjoy some delicious homemade baking!

It was such a lovely gesture, and we’re genuinely grateful to have been thought of.

From all of us here at Galway SPCA, both two-legged and four-legged, THANK YOU! ❤️🐾 taken in NUIG Galway University by @galwayspca
