At last year’s OnChain Festival, I was asked the question about cultural relevance in games, and here’s a snapshot of what I had to say.

Make it fun. 🎮

At the core, many people don't really care about how culturally relevant or accurate your game is if it isn’t fun to play. Unless you’re building an educational game or using games for agenda (in which the experience still needs to be engaging) entertainment remains a huge part of the equation. .

But fun goes beyond gameplay. UI and UX are important elements of this, yet they’re often overlooked when we talk about making games fun.

You can build a game around folklore, mythology, history, or even the familiar hut-inspired aesthetics we sometimes associate with African-themed games, cultural representation alone isn’t enough.

Make it intuitive, engaging and enjoyable.

Our cultures can inspire the world’s most compelling games, and where cultural relevance gets people interested; great game design keeps them playing.
