In Short: In teams of up to four people, players control dwarves miners, shooting onrushing hordes of aliens in mazes of destructible underground tunnels, before heading for an extraction point.

✅: Satisfying alien-shooting action, destructible environments and a steady stream of weapon upgrades. Multiple mission types and unlockable equipment offer plenty of reasons to keep playing.

❌: Gameplay is overly simplistic, with little to do beyond moving and picking upgrades. Repetitive dialogue and noisy narration become increasingly irritating on a bigger screen. by @gamecentralmetro

GTA 6 leaker Cyberleek is back, and things are escalating FAST. After dropping more unseen gameplay footage, including in-game nudity, the infamous leaker is now threatening to leak the entire game. Cyberleek claims to have a playable build containing the whole story, potentially putting Rockstar’s biggest release at risk. If the claims are true, this could be one of the biggest leaks in gaming history by @gamecentralmetro

‘Things have changed in recent years and for the better, because I’d say it’s now rare for licensed games to do badly. I guess because it costs too much to get the licence you’ve got to make an effort or there’s no point. Even so, that’s no guarantee that it will sell well, as the increasingly spooky Marvel curse proves.

Not only are they good games, but they all nail that Star Wars feel and, importantly to me, they help promote genres that otherwise don’t get made much anymore. EA would never publish a turn-based strategy if it didn’t have a licence attached and future racers like WipEout and F-Zero just don’t get made now, so Galactic Racer is the only way it could happen.’ by @gamecentralmetro

Sony’s decision to abandon physical PlayStation discs after 2027 was justified on the basis that physical game sales are dwindling, and while that might be true on a broader level, it’s clear there’s still a significant appetite for boxed games – especially for the most mainstream titles.

That’s been evident from the myriad of petitions and protests which have emerged in the wake of the announcement, but now there’s new concrete data to support the notion.

As reported by The Game Business based on data from Ampere Analysis, 35% of Marvel’s Wolverine worldwide sales were the boxed version.

Based on new data in the US, it seems boxed alternatives to discs are selling well, namely Game-Key Cards on the Nintendo Switch 2.

While Sony has shown no signs of backtracking on its decision to stop producing discs, this might, at the very least, raise an eyebrow within Sony HQ – especially if it continues with Until Dawn 2 and God Of War Laufey next year. by @gamecentralmetro

A bundle of Hollow Knight cosmetics for Fortnite is only available for a week and is being mocked by fans as ‘the type of greed they talk about in the Bible.’

Even indie video games are fair game, so long as they’re widely popular, with Hollow Knight being the most recent addition. Not as a full skin but as a sidekick – a new cosmetic type established earlier in the year.

Said cosmetic, along with a couple of others, has been added to the Fortnite store for a limited time and Hollow Knight fans have been taken aback by its pricing; including the fact that it costs more than the Hollow Knight game itself. by @gamecentralmetro

After six hours hands-on, this stylish action epic blends Devil May Cry-style combat with spectacular, cinematic boss battles. With hype building and pre-orders soaring, S-Game’s latest could be one to watch.

Phantom Blade Zero might seem like a new IP to Western audiences, but it’s technically the fifth game set within the same universe. All the prior titles were action role-players for mobile, starting with 2010’s Rainblood: Town Of Death and culminating with 2023’s Phantom Blade: Executioners.

What defines the series is the ‘kung-fu punk’ buzz phrase you may have heard a lot in Zero’s marketing.

This refers to the combat’s inspiration from Chinese martial arts and the steampunk aesthetic imbued throughout the game’s world, but it also extends to the game’s debt to classic martial arts cinema. by @gamecentralmetro

In Short: A gloriously grotesque survival horror that captures the twisted spirit of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, with disturbing imagery, puzzles and some nightmarish encounters, though its gameplay doesn’t always hit as hard as its atmosphere.

✅: A brilliantly nasty take on the Hellraiser universe, with grotesque visuals, unsettling environments and some excellent uses of the Genesis Configuration. Fans will love how faithfully it embraces the franchise’s depraved aesthetic.

❌: The combat and exploration can feel fairly standard, and some of the horror loses its impact when the game leans too heavily into gore and shock value rather than sustained tension. by @gamecentralmetro

The Thursday letters page tries to estimate when the next mainline Zelda will be out, as one reader is glad to hear Star Wars Zero Company staff are back to work.

One user, Bootles said ‘When it’ll be announced is harder to predict but while there’s a small chance of next year I think Mario will be the focus in 2027 and a Zelda reveal is more likely the year after’. by @gamecentralmetro

It’s still too early to tell how successful Gears Of War: E-Day is, considering it only launched two days ago (although those who paid for early access have been playing since last week), but it’s also not clear exactly what expectations Microsoft has for it.

The game’s reach is limited by it being an Xbox exclusive, since the console’s userbase remains so small, and although Gears Of War was once a flagship Xbox franchise, it’s not the same cultural juggernaut it was during the Xbox 360 days.

In a BBC interview, Crump described E-Day as a ‘great foundation’ for future games while promising the next Gears ‘will not take nearly as long.’ As a reminder, E-Day is the first new Gears game since 2019’s Gears 5, not counting the 2020 tactics spin-off or last year’s enhanced re-release of the first game.

Taken at face value, this means E-Day 2, or whatever it may be called, should take less than seven years, which is hopefully a promising sign for the fate of E-Day’s staff.

Xbox is still in the process of laying off hundreds of employees, having cut a further 268 people just last month.

More than 1,000 are still set to go by next July.
Amongst those that have already been laid off are Gears Of War story director Juan Vaca, who was jettisoned just five days after E-Day went gold. What that implies about the future storyline of the series is unclear. by @gamecentralmetro

In a busy year of great games Star Wars Zero Company still stands out as one of the best. That’s why it was incredibly disappointing to hear that developer Bit Reactor was in dire straits even before launch.

Having run out of money ahead of the game’s launch, Bit Reactor had to place around 80% of the team on unpaid leave, although the studio expressed hope it would eventually bring everyone back.

Although there’s still no official sales figures from Bit Reactor or publisher EA, signs continue to suggest Zero Company has performed well, as team members have begun returning to Bit Reactor and for the first time the studio has teased ‘continued support’ for the game. by @gamecentralmetro

In Short: An ambitious, brain-melting puzzle game packed with clever mechanics and an almost absurd amount of content, but its sheer scale can eventually become exhausting.

✅: Brilliant variety of puzzles, clever mechanics and plenty of satisfying “aha!” moments. The freedom to tackle different areas in your own order is a great touch.

❌: Overwhelmingly large and sometimes exhausting, with a slow-burn story and dialogue that don’t always give you much reason to keep pushing forward by @gamecentralmetro
