A new church-wide series promises to tackle “Why ‘Presbyterian’ will never be a political party.” The free series will be facilitated by the current Co-Moderators of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Rev. Marta Pumroy-Cordero and the Rev. Dr. Kris Schondelmeyer, who said the key question for the series is not which political party is Presbyterian, but “how does being Presbyterian shape the way we participate in public life?”

The series is open to all, including church leaders, clergy, staff, mid council leaders, and congregation members, and will take place over Zoom at 1 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, Oct. 2, Friday, Oct. 16, and Friday, Oct. 30. Each session will have a different focus and feature guests from denominational leadership. Participants can register for each online session individually (registration links in comments).

Tonight, as Marta and I lead evening worship during the Presbyterian Life & Witness Board meeting, we were reminded that today, September 15, marks a painful anniversary in our nation’s history.

On September 15, 1963, members of the Ku Klux Klan bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama; a congregation that had become an important center of the Civil Rights Movement. Four Black girls…four precious lives…were killed:

Denise McNair, 11
Addie Mae Collins, 14
Carole Robertson, 14
Cynthia Wesley, 14

They had gone to church that Sunday morning.

Sixty-three years later, we remember their names. We grieve lives stolen by racism and hatred. And we remember that the work of healing and justice is not finished.

In Revelation, John sees the river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God, with the tree of life growing on either side. And then comes this extraordinary promise: “the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.”

Marta and I have been inviting the church to “Be the Leaves.”

Tonight, those words carried particular weight.

To be the leaves is to refuse to accept hatred as inevitable. It is to confront racism and injustice wherever they take root. It is to stand with those who are hurting, to repair what has been broken, and to become a healing and hope-filled presence in a wounded world.

We still have much work to do.

So may we remember Denise, Addie Mae, Carole, and Cynthia…not only with our words, but with our lives.

May we work for justice.
May we practice healing.
May we embody hope.

May we “Be the Leaves”…for the healing of the nations. by @gamoderators

Today, we remember.

We pray for those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001; for those who carry the wounds of that day; and for all who continue to live with the consequences of violence and hatred.

May we remember not only the lives lost, but the courage, compassion, and solidarity that emerged in the days that followed.

May we choose peace over fear, compassion over hatred, and love over violence.

May we never forget. And may we never stop working for a world where every life is sacred.

Here's a brief glimpse of the music our choir shared this weekend at Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City.

I am continually grateful for the extraordinary ministry of all our choirs at First Presbyterian Church of Davenport, IA and for the gifted leadership of Matt Bishop, our Director of Music and Arts. Week after week, they don't simply perform beautiful music...they lead people into worship.

This clip is just a small taste of a weekend filled with grace, hospitality, and the joy of praising God together with siblings in other congregations.

One of the great joys of serving as Co-Moderator is the opportunity to experience the incredible breadth and beauty of Christ's Church.

This weekend, I had the privilege of bringing greetings from the Presbyterian Church (USA) to two remarkable congregations.

On Saturday evening, our choir from First Presbyterian Church of Davenport, IA shared a concert at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas as a benefit for the Covenant Network of Presbyterians. It was a joy to greet the congregation, both on behalf of my congregation, and on behalf of the wider church.

Then on Sunday morning, our choir helped lead worship at Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, where I again had the honor of bringing greetings. I was humbled to witness their generous hospitality. I was especially grateful to meet Rev. Sarah Speed, whose sermon on compassion reminded us that, in a world full of competing priorities and distractions, Jesus remains the center of it all. Her message was both beautiful and deeply needed.

I also left inspired by the way Second Presbyterian welcomes young families. Their commitment to creating a place where children belong and parents are supported is a witness to the whole church.

It was also a pleasure to meet one of their elders, Josephine Njoroge, former Moderator of Heartland Presbytery, whose faithful leadership continues to bless the church.

Weekends like this remind me that the Church is far bigger than any one congregation. Across our denomination, faithful disciples are proclaiming the gospel, extending compassion, nurturing the next generation, and bearing witness to what it means to "Be the Leaves."

Last week, Marta and I had the blessing of spending time on Zoom with several former Moderators and Co-Moderators of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

What struck me most wasn't just their wisdom...it was their love for the Church.

They spoke honestly about the challenges facing the church. They didn't minimize the hard conversations, the disappointments, or the weight of leadership. But they also reminded us that every generation has faced moments when the future felt uncertain, and every generation has discovered that God's Spirit was already at work, leading the church into something new.

I came away grateful for their encouragement, their stories, and their prayers. They reminded us that this ministry isn't about having all the answers. It's about listening well, loving deeply, trusting Christ, and helping the church discern where the River of Life is flowing next.

Thank you to those who have gone before us for walking alongside those of us who now carry this calling. Your wisdom is a gift. Your hope is contagious. And your faithfulness is an example for us all of what it means to "Be the Leaves," to be a healing and hope-filled presence in God's world.
