Death Alone live and unrehearsed in my living room. This is the first time I’ve played this one live, so enjoy the poor guitar and keyboard playing. If you’d like to hear me butcher any more songs drop a request in the comments. by @gapinggraves_

For guitars on the record I used my two Jazzmasters through a 65RI Princeton Reverb. The black guitar with humbuckers was played on ‘Robert Smith Wishlist’, and the traditional green one everywhere else. I wrote all of the lyrics playing the songs on the sparkley danelectro. Bass parts were recorded on my Mark Hoppus P-Bass, along with a Bass VI set up with stupidly thin strings and a high action to produce ~The Cure~ sound. I used a lot of effects pedals, the most prominent of which are probably the Moog Flanger and Red Witch Violetta delay. by @gapinggraves_

I used three synths on the Magick Lantern Music EP. A @teenageengineering OP-1, a @moogsynthesizers Matriarch and a @kurzweilmusic K2000R. The first and last song were written virtually on the day I got my Matriarch, with the OP-1 adding textures and pad sounds all over the EP. The K2000R is by far the most complicated synth I own, but the string sounds on the record are all generated from this incredible 1980s super computer of a synthesiser. by @gapinggraves_

About the record:

‘Magick Lantern Music’ unfurls a thread of what performance and artifice mean to the practice of every day life. From ‘Pagliacci’s Dead’, which glares at digital culture through the lens of the Commedia Dell'arte, to the kitchen sink notion of projecting personal miseries into loved ones as a habit in ‘Grand Guignol Picture Show’.

Using a small ensemble of analog and digital synthesisers, stringed instruments and samplers, the record forms a glacial and indrawn Electronic Post-Punk sound. With invocations of The Cure, Cocteau Twins and Xiu Xiu shaping the song writing; this E.P. is made for fellow fans of goth music, occultism, Rita Tushingham, self-perpetuating gloom and human tenderness in hard places.

‘Death Alone’ is still available on Bandcamp, Spotify and Apple’s services. I wrote and recorded this in about half a day. It’s a song about not seeing another person for months on end and feeling it. That, and being a goth in trackies. by @gapinggraves_
