We look forward to welcoming you back in September for the opening of An Eye Dreads the Sun, curated by Cynthia Jordens.

Materials are not silent witnesses. They carry stories and traces of origin and loss, and transmit knowledge. In 𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙮𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣, earth, plant-based pigments, textiles, sound, and the human voice act as vessels of memory. Across the works in the exhibition, materials do more than preserve traces of history: they give those traces a form, allowing what has been displaced, silenced, or lost to resurface.

The title, drawn from a poem by Etel Adnan, evokes an ambiguous image: the sun as a life-giving force as well as an eye that witnesses violence, strife, and displacement. In the monumental installation ‘A Thousand Sunsets’ (2026), Atousa Bandeh gives this tension material form. The installation brings together the ever-changing colours of sunsets, seemingly suspending this fleeting moment in time.

The exhibition focuses on what often remains out of sight and what the sun ultimately brings to light. Taqwa Ali works with natural materials such as seawater, salt, hibiscus, and limestone to explore the relationship between landscape and displacement. In ‘A Score for Atat’s Homestead’, AYO evokes a remembered homeland through sound. In Jennifer Tee’s work, the tulip refers to colonial trade networks, while Nolan Oswald Dennis reworks the tools and logic of archaeology to question how histories are extracted from land.

As you enter 𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙮𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣, the first work you encounter is Taqwa Ali’s diptych ‘The Fallen Rain’ (2025). For this work, Ali uses hibiscus, a material she strongly associates with her homeland, Sudan. She makes the pigment herself: dried hibiscus flowers are steeped in water, dried again and ground, before being mixed with an oil emulsifier. During the drying process, a chemical reaction transforms the initially red colour into deep shades of blue and grey. In this process, the constant interplay between control and chance is central, giving rise to organic forms and subtle textures.

In dialogue with the canvases, the installation ‘The Rainmaker Who Took The Gods To The Streets’ (2025) brings together limestone sculptures, food offerings and found objects in a sanctuary where spirituality and the climate crisis are interwoven. From within the installation, the voice of an invisible female rainmaker can be heard. In her monologue, she confronts a higher power with a devastating flood that she may have caused herself.

For this work, Ali draws on the history of Buitenplaats Kasteel Wijlre, where she stayed in the autumn of 2025 and researched the flood that struck Limburg in 2021. Her sources also include John S. Mbiti’s influential study African Religions and Philosophy (1990). These sources converge in a myth in which a ritual to ward off drought turns into a catastrophic flood.

On Friday 23 October, Garage Rotterdam presents an evening of experimental electronics, drone and improvisation, with live performances by A. Crespo Barba (@acrespobarba) and the trio Lucija Gregov (@lu_ci_____) Christine Cornwell (@csc_music) and Ruben Kotkamp (@rubenkotkamp) ⊹

𝐀. 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐚
Barcelona-based artist, composer and researcher A. Crespo Barba works across experimental music and multidisciplinary practices. His work explores the physical and emotional potential of sound, with a particular interest in sonic friction and the liminal territory between beauty and degradation. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Artistic Research, investigating sonic friction as a generative force for creating new aesthetic possibilities and futures.

𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐣𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐯 + 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 + 𝐑𝐮𝐛𝐞𝐧 𝐊𝐨𝐭𝐤𝐚𝐦𝐩
Transdisciplinary artist and electroacoustic musician Ruben Kotkamp works with cellist Lucija Gregov and violinist Christine Cornwell, exploring the tension between fixed media and free improvisation. Their cyclical process draws on second-order cybernetics: feedback between composed material, live improvisation, the space and the audience continuously reshapes the music. Each performance feeds into the next, creating an iterative system in which composition and improvisation evolve together over time.

Atousa Bandeh’s monumental installation ‘A Thousand Sunsets’ (2026) became an important point of departure for 𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙮𝙚 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣. The exhibition title is taken from a poem by Etel Adnan (1925–2021), the poet, artist and thinker whose work evokes the sun as both a life-giving force and a witness to violence, war and displacement.

In ‘A Thousand Sunsets’, Atousa Bandeh translates the colours of countless sunsets into a monumental textile installation. Layers of everyday fabrics, lace, tablecloths and domestic textiles are combined with paint and pigment to form a sculptural whole that evokes a mountain landscape, a curtain or a shelter. These domestic materials carry associations with memory and migration, referring to a home that may feel tangibly close while remaining out of reach. The recurring sunset marks the passing of time and the longing for a home that continues to exist in memory.

This tension between seeing and not fully seeing also runs through Bandeh’s other works in the exhibition. In ‘Boy in a Yellow Vest’ and ‘Two Boys’, figures emerge through layers of textile, pattern and paint, complicating what can be read from outward appearance alone.

Both Hats On: Meetup & Rider for Artist-Parents

Becoming a parent while sustaining a life as an artist raises questions rarely addressed in the spaces where we talk about artistic practice, labour, or care.

How do you keep working when studios, residencies, funding schemes, and rehearsal spaces were never built with parenthood in mind, as Lucy Jones addresses in her book Matrescence? What do fair working conditions even mean, when unpaid care work is so often invisible in how we plan, budget, and negotiate our practice?

This meet-up brings artist-parents in The Netherlands together to talk challenges, share best practices, and build community and within the workshop we will start drafting a rider naming the working conditions artist-parents need to do their work and raise their children.

Bring your questions, your experience, and, if needed, your child. This is the beginning of a conversation we hope continues well beyond one morning.

Date & Time: 30.10.26 | 9:30–13:30
Location: Garage Rotterdam
Language: English | Free
Facilities: Breastfeeding space & changing table on-site

Bring your questions, your experience. Let’s build a more supportive future for artist-parents. 💪
